Keane is often spoken about as a hard man, but he wasn't he was dirty. Alfie Haaland disputes this.

It's great that your dad distinguished between hard and dirty players. Many supporters mistake dirty for hard. Keane is often spoken about as a hard man, but he wasn't he was dirty. Players are not hard if they deliberately foul or go out to hurt players. Hard players are the ones that will put themselves in danger whilst trying to win the ball. Stokies often forget Bloor, hard but fair. Micky Bernard was borderline dirty. I think players can be hard and dirty (oo err). Keane was one such player I don't think he was. If you mean hard tackling maybe, but he never took a risk. His assault on Haaland was cowardly.

While we never saw the best (worst) of him while he was here on loan, Danny Tiatto was an absolute psycho.

Eddie Clamp was Stan's minder and he took his job very seriously indeed .Apart from being a hard man he could play a bit too.

Billy Whitehurst Bare knuckle fighter I would suggest Whitehurst is possibly the hardest fooballer of the last 40 years Fairly sure Vinnie Jones has said as much, and Neil Ruddock woukdnt tangle with him Mick Harford possibly not far behind

I can't remember the occasion though, probably someone on here can?

Way before my time, but from all I've read and heard and the pitches they played on with the medicine balls, sacrificing peak years to serve in World War II, the name that comes to mind for me? Frank Soo And apparently a gentleman off the pitch. Tough renaissance man

I can't remember the occasion though, probably someone on here can? Birmingham v Coventry. Big Sam smashed Big Mick in the face with his elbow. Mick Harford needed over 100 stitches in his mouth & his tooth came through his top lip. Talking of Big Sam, a friend of mine was at Bolton at the same time as he played for them. He reckons he really was Big Sam & would take great delight in whacking it in the faces of his teammates in the communal bath after a match. Anyway, I digress…
