Super Jon has to be up there. Could take a hit. And dole them out. Whelan of course. Shawcross in an elegant way (!). There were very few like Gerry Taggart. And of course Denis Smith (whose hand I actually held, walking out to the pitch, 5o-plus years ago, when I was a mascot ... Stoke played a friendly against Thurles Town in the Republic .. he was a softie underneath it all!) Are you sure it was his hand you were holding?

As already mentioned, Clamp, Setters and Bernard were all pretty tough. My choice would be Calvin Palmer. A sneaky mention for Peter Dobing. A quiet, skillful footballer who didn’t take fools gladly.

Over many years I've seen most of our hard men, and we've had some fearsome ones, but Eddie Clamp takes my vote. He was frightening to even watch, let alone play against...if you dared to play against him. Most opposition players at that time got rid of the ball when Clamp got close enough to tackle.

Hard, take no bollocks players - Denis Smith Outright nasty ( in a cute sort of "glad hes on our side" sort of way) - Mick Kennedy.... Wouldn't say he was the hardest but he was certainly the dirtiest player I've seen playing for us. He was an animal and the only player I've been ashamed of playing for us. Vile piece of work. OS.

He could actually play a bit too, we didn't see much of that until Macari was in charge though

Interesting that In his biography Denis had quite a bit of admiration for the 70s Leeds team. He said the hardest and nastiest of them all was Johnny Giles!! Far mure subtle than Charlton, Hunter, Bremner etc, so folk didnt notice it, but was capable of giving it out as much as anyone

For me it's gotta be Eddie Clamp. He reminded me of Les Kellet the wrestler who was so good that he could be comedic at the dark arts. Eddie was like that and you couldn't help but grin at his antics. OS.

Denis Smith Gerry Taggart Eddy Clamp Pejic But my late Dad who watched Stoke during the 1930s used to say Charlie Scrimshaw was the hardest and dirtiest player he ever saw. It's great that your dad distinguished between hard and dirty players. Many supporters mistake dirty for hard. Keane is often spoken about as a hard man, but he wasn't he was dirty. Players are not hard if they deliberately foul or go out to hurt players. Hard players are the ones that will put themselves in danger whilst trying to win the ball. Stokies often forget Bloor, hard but fair. Micky Bernard was borderline dirty.

In terms of pure mentality and not taking shit, probably Whelan. May not have been the biggest or strongest but was well respected amongst the squad and the main man to dish out bolluckings during the TP/ Hughes era

I used to marvel at how graceful he was, seemed to glide across the back line and read the game so well. I always used to think re Watson and Stan how I wished I'd seen them regularly when they were in their prime.

Not sure about him being hard but he was the finest centre half we've had at Stoke since Franklin. He was pure class. OS. I agree completely. I met Dave Watson in the Waddo a few years ago and told him exactly that and I quote 'Denis Smith was by far the best Stoke CB I ever saw and was my hero, Stoke City through & through BUT you were the classiest'. As you say OS pure class.
