Closest in current squad Ben “the championship gatusso” Pearson? Kamara is before my time so it’s slightly weird to hear he was a hardman in his playing days. I only know him as a goofball tv personality. Pearson isn't hard. I've been amazed at how weak he's been and how hopeless he is at the dark arts. Whenever he played against us he seemed to be a master of them - probably shows how inept our midefielders were previously. Kamara was an absolute nutter - as far away from his tv image as you could get!

Dunno but he lived in the same close as a mate of my brothers on Westbury Park Clayton for a bit back in the day. One scary looking man, built like a sculpted boulder 😬 I found myself talking to Noel Blake (and Tony Scholes) at the Premier League Coaching and Performance Summit at a very posh hotel in Manchester on Monday night. Top bloke (Blake, not Scholes). This World of Twist thing is getting really abstract now.

From the few who saw him play & regular post on here Eddie sounded like a take no shit sort of guy Back in the day Eddie was Stan's "minder" in those early seasons after promotion in 63. My first ever game was in that season vs Burnley at home. 3-0 up at halftime for some reason only known to Eddie he flattened their winger, John Connelly, with a headbutt. Eddie didn’t even wait for the ref to send him off, he just trotted off down the tunnel. The game ended 4-4.

Isnt he ex Brum Zulu or has strong links with them? Apparantly, hes a decent bloke, seems to be involved with SCOBA quite a bit The one Stoke player with whom I’ve had the fortune to prop up a bar with on a couple of occasions. Can confirm he’s a lovely bloke and always seemed genuinely happy to meet a Stokie and share some memories. It is funny how lads with kind, warm personalities can turn into such ice-cold uncompromising bastards on the pitch. You see it at all levels, even kids’ football sometimes. As much as I admired the likes of Bluto, Smithy and the like I just can't see past Noel Blake as the hardest I've seen in a Stoke shirt. Never once saw anyone chance it with him, either.

In the current squad I'd probably have to give it Mrs Pottermus. I reckon Manhoef could throw a bomb if he could reach you, basing this purely off him being his fathers son.

Of the current squad, an in-form Pearson comes closest.

Smithy was deemed hard because he had lots of breaks & put his head in where others wouldn't. Plus he had Pej & Bluto there with him. Setters was one of those people that, as soon as you looked at him, you kept away. My money would be on Setters, every time. He was hard at Man.U & he was just the same for us.

In the current squad I'd probably have to give it Mrs Pottermus. Been thinking this for a while. Not a single hard nut in the squad really. Gibson gives it a go but doesn't seem to have that aura about him. Every team needs a hard case in my opinion. Someone a little bit nasty to make opposition teams think a bit. Maybe I'm old school but I still think there's a place for those players even if the game has gone a bit soft.. Don't think I'd be happy to cross paths with Johansson down a dark alley at night. Craziest eyes I've ever seen. Outfield squad is very very light weight in general to be fair. Will lead to us getting bullied a few times this season I reckon. Although I was pleaseantly surprised that we handled Millwall very well considering they had the ref enabling all of their dirty bullshit tactics.

As already mentioned, Clamp, Setters and Bernard were all pretty tough. My choice would be Calvin Palmer.

Gotta be noel blake surely. He'd scare chuck fookin norris. No, the real scary Blake was Mrs Blake. I attended the Autoglass Trophy final as a guest of the directors and at the hotel after the game she was giving the hotel staff unbelievable aggro - and I just asked if everything was OK? She then turned on me telling me to mind my own f$$ing business or she would sort me out. She was very scary so left her to it. No wonder Noel was a hard man, he needed to be

It's a shame he never played for us, but Pulis was big trouble on the pitch. Not much of a player per se. Just plain hard.

Super Jon has to be up there. Could take a hit. And dole them out. Whelan of course. Shawcross in an elegant way (!). There were very few like Gerry Taggart. And of course Denis Smith (whose hand I actually held, walking out to the pitch, 5o-plus years ago, when I was a mascot ... Stoke played a friendly against Thurles Town in the Republic .. he was a softie underneath it all!)

Maurice Setters, a genuine orrible break your legs man. No competition, he would get red carded when you literally had to kill somebody to get sent off.

Maurice Setters was an uncompromising player by all accounts. As others have already said, if it was an out and out scrap then Billy Whitehurst.

Never saw Whitehurst but I've read about him, I think it was in Eric Skeels's book (which was very good). I watched Setters as a youth, the man was brutal and didn't give a shit. Ended up as Jack Charlton's assistant with Ireland I think.

I have read Smithy's book. He talks about his childhood and teens in Meir. It's clear the man was not to be messed with.... on or off the pitch!
