Who do we think are the "hardest" players to have played for Stoke? (ps - nothing to do with erectile dysfunction). I'll give Huth's opinion - Huth's Stoke Hard Man

Denis Smith Gerry Taggart Eddy Clamp Pejic
But my late Dad who watched Stoke during the 1930s used to say Charlie Scrimshaw was the hardest and dirtiest player he ever saw.

I’ve seen a few over the years supporting and suffering Stoke City. Maurice Setters was certainly up there with Denis Smith.

In the current squad I'd probably have to give it Mrs Pottermus.

In the current squad I'd probably have to give it Mrs Pottermus. Been thinking this for a while. Not a single hard nut in the squad really. Gibson gives it a go but doesn't seem to have that aura about him. Every team needs a hard case in my opinion. Someone a little bit nasty to make opposition teams think a bit. Maybe I'm old school but I still think there's a place for those players even if the game has gone a bit soft..

One scary looking man, built like a sculpted boulder 😬

Glenn Whelan was one not to be messed with in a quiet sort of way. Overson was a beast who could put it about if needed.

You just can't get away with it anymore as even clean but hard tackles have been pretty much outlawed. Also with VAR you can't get away with the "dark arts" side of the game. Someone like Roy Keane would be getting sent off every game, never mind some of the players from 70's/80's

Closest in current squad Ben “the championship gatusso” Pearson?
Kamara is before my time so it’s slightly weird to hear he was a hardman in his playing days. I only know him as a goofball tv personality.

Hard men can still push boundaries and have an intimidating presence though. A bit more nuanced I suppose. That said I'm trying to think of a Premier league hard man and nobody is coming to mind 🤔

I agree mate and the only thing for me that's changed is you need your horrible bastard in centre midfield with one at the back being a bonus. Man City are absolutely dog shit without Rodri. Stoke hopefully have one once he's fit - I watch Dundee United and they defo need one or they'll nosedive through the winter.

It's gone out of the game, you just cant get away with it anymore. Even good tackles are penalised alot of the time. Alan Bloor would be my nomination btw

Top bloke (Blake, not Scholes).

Can confirm he’s a lovely bloke and always seemed genuinely happy to meet a Stokie and share some memories. It is funny how lads with kind, warm personalities can turn into such ice-cold uncompromising bastards on the pitch. You see it at all levels, even kids’ football sometimes.
