Yes, I remember that one as well. As you say, a classic. First time that I'd sat at a match.

I remember being disappointed that things had got so bad we couldn't beat little Luton! Really? At that ,brief, point in time Stoke and Luton we're probably the most exciting teams in the country That season was our best season for years and we weren't as good again until Hughes time

I thought Chamberlain was better than John Barnes.

I thought Chamberlain was better than John Barnes. So did the Brazilian media in 1984 That wonder goal from Barnes in The Maracana Chamberlain got man of the match Chamberlain was definitely the more talented of the two However Chamberlain career went south due to injuries and a terrible move to Sheffield Wednesday who were playing good ball Barnes git better and better and by late 80's was absolutely superb for Liverpool

Vintage Stoke City. Swaggering, retro, top flight football in a classic old arena (it looked so much better before the exec boxes and when the corner section between the Boothen and Butler Street was still open). What a great side we had at the time. Such a shame that just two years later we were reduced to a carcass and became a laughing stock.

I was there - that turn and cross was sublime.
He was on The Sooty Show soon afterwards. That’s when you knew he’d arrived.

If only his hamstrings were better or he'd gone to a better manager than Howard Fucking Wilkinson.
He'd played POMO before and knew how shit it was. Why in God's name did he go there?
A shooting star that shone too briefly.
