If Carlsberg did Premier League’s how would yours be made up? Obviously the riffraff clubs eg Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton etc would be put in their proper places and replaced by the bigger, more glamorous and traditional football clubs. Anyway in my world the elite league would compromise….. Arsenal Aston Villa Blackburn Rovers Bolton Wanderers Chelsea Everton Leeds United Liverpool Manchester United Manchester City Newcastle United Nottingham Forest Preston North End Tottenham Hotspur STOKE CITY Sunderland Sheffield United Sheffield Wednesday West Ham United Wolverhampton Wanderers All ‘proper’ football clubs, with the likes of Leicester City, Fulham, Portsmouth, WBA, Burnley etc all vying for a place at the top table

I’d be happier if the sacked the glory hunting teams to Europe and let the proper fans have their day in the sun but in a miserable sod

I don’t really agree with the concept. The teams that deserve to be there are the ones that play well enough to get there and stay there.
It’s like when fans dismiss other clubs as “tinpot”. To you they may be tinpot. To their fans that club means the world.
You could even make the argument that fans of clubs like Brentford and Bournemouth who have spent the majority of their football-watching lives slogging around the lower leagues are the most “proper” fans of all.
That being said, I do think there are too many London and south coast teams in the Prem these days. But the onus is on the likes of Stoke, the Sheffield clubs, Leeds, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, West Brom, Blackburn etc. to play well enough to replace them.

I'd go old school and do it according to who were founder member clubs and who arrived shortly after. Effectively the first 20 teams in the top division.
Accrington Stanley Arsenal Aston Villa Barnsley Blackburn Rovers Bolton Wanderers Bradford City Bristol City Burnley Chelsea Derby County Everton Notts County Preston North End Stoke City Sunderland Sheffield Wednesday Tottenham Hotspur West Bromwich Albion Wolverhampton Wanderers

Understand what you’re saying but remember this is a fantasy question. Obviously fans of the ‘smaller’ clubs are just as committed as those of ‘bigger’ clubs maybe even more so than the tourist clubs of ManU Fulham etc but tbh give me a packed Ewood over a packed Vitality any day.

Doesn’t seem right without the Baggies or Derby, but who do you remove? Preston? Sheffield Utd? Most would say we don’t really deserve a place in the top 20. Top 30, perhaps. For as much as you can’t argue with the Arse being one of the first names on the list, though, what I wouldn’t give to see them drop out. If Carlsberg did PLs, they’d be in the Southern Counties.

I know we’re leaning into the history here but Preston have been bumbling around in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th divisions with average crowds of about 10k since the Beatles were starting out in Hamburg. Not sure they have a claim to being a “historic” top-flight club when they haven’t been in it for 65 years

Yes that’s about the long and short of it, honest debate and opinions. I dare say it would be possible to make a case for about 40 clubs to be in the top flight.

There was a letter in 'When Saturday Comes' a few years ago in which the writer said that they have always regarded Watford as a big club because Watford were riding high in the 1980s when they first became interested in football and by the same token they didn't regard Manchester City as a big club as they were in the doldrums at the same time.
That is probably true for most of us. Derby didn't get back to Division One until about 1969 so I sort of see them as a lower division club, which is a bit illogical given their two league titles in the 1970s.
Crystal Palace, my local club, are not big for the same reason (without checking I think they were promoted with Derby).
I also see Burnley as bigger than Blackburn because they were more successful at the beginning of the 1960s when I first took an interest in football. In reality they are probably on a par with each other in terms of their history.

Interesting that PL, embarrassing to have spent so long in the top flight and have won only one proper trophy. It is a bit. Boro can rival us with only one, but they've been to a few more finals, including a UEFA final. In the 20-40 group there are some others with only one (Saints, Charlton, Notts Co). In the top 40 I can only see Fulham and Palace with no major trophies at all.
