Sir Ernest Shackleton for his many fetes of endurance (excuse the pun). Leading all his 28 crew from the Endurance sinking across pack ice and open sea to relative safety of Elephant Island. Then his 800 mile 16 day boat journey to South Georgia in whaler James Caird which the crew converted to a sailing boat. They used just a sextant and dead reckoning to navigate the most inhospitable sea on Earth and after just three clear sun sightings they managed to get to the little island. But his adventure didn’t end then because they had landed at the wrong end of the island from the Stromness whaling station and the James Caird was in no state to go round the island by sea. So Shackleton and 2 others made what was probably the first traverse of South Georgia on foot & with just a small scale map. They achieved this and went on to rescue the other three. It took several months to get a ship from Chile and right weather conditions to rescue the remaining 22 on Elephant Island. I would love to have walked in his shoes for just a few days of that epic 21 month expedition. IMO Shackleton was a greater leader than Scott simply because Shackleton put his men’s safety above everything whereas Scott put the success of his expedition above all which was his demise along with his team of 4 men. The main cause of their demise was the miscalculation of daily calories needed which was 7000 per day in order to endure the conditions. It is estimated that the average calorie intake was as low as 3800 per day. All died as a result of hypothermia probably brought on by malnutrition and starvation.
