It's always harsh to lay into young players, but Junior looks so far off the required level in pretty much every aspect. And he has done since he arrived bar 2-3 promising games before he went to AFCON.
Definitely time to give Stevens a run at left-back - but unfortunately we've got no safety valve option on the right.

For me, the problems are much bigger than the actual full backs.
People complain about them playing narrow, yet they probably need to as the central midfield offer our centre backs no protection. How many times have we seen players running directly at our CBs without challenge, or cut backs on the edge of the area to opponents in 5-10 yards of space. The full backs will come narrow to try to combat this and help the CBs.
You’re then left with space on the wings for opposition to run at the full backs, which isn’t helped as our ‘wingers’ aren’t helping out enough.
All of this is compounded by the team either being unfit or not knowing when to press effectively and subsequently being absolutely bollocksed every second half.
It’s a mess but it isn’t solely down to the full backs. Lots for the new ‘head coach’ to work on.

Need change next game and no more of this inverted full back rubbish as it gives way to much space.
Back 4 for Boro
Dixon
Phillips
Gibson
Stevens
Juniors a calamity and Bocat is very inconsistent and Stevens is a better defender

Dixon potentially and hasn’t Sako played there too. Risky but I can’t see how they can do any worse. |

Well quite a few said we were concerned about the full backs, well me anyway
Both OK at going forward but number 1 thing is they don't defend well enough.
Stevens is a good left back, so it would be him and Gooch as the Op suggested

Bocat did ok
Junior is miles out of his depth and he knows it.
His confidence is in the toilet
Needs time out of the first team and s period of intense coaching.
Has the physical attributes to succeed, but will not get better without lots of help.

Have to agree, the fullbacks look awful. The midfield need a rocket too because a few times last night they didn’t track back enough, thereby forcing the fullbacks inside to pick up players, thereby providing the usual 10-15 crossing opportunities we’ve now become accustomed to seeing. Unless it is sorted quickly we’re going to concede a hell of a lot of goals this season.

He was dog shit 1st half. Its like that time we tried to tur Diouf into a right back. He wasn’t, he was fine. And Diouf did well at right back, it’s nothing like that sadly. 🤣 Ball watching all night. Needs some serious coaching to get up to standard. Worrying that we pin pointed junior as the best prospect in the lower leagues |

Hopefully the coach will be working on this as we are like a fucking sieve at the back at the moment. Time and time again we’ve been mullered down the wings this season…. IMHO The reason we leave too much space is because we are defending far too narrow. We need to get the distances between the centre backs and the full backs right. The full back should get closer to the winger to try and cut off the supply line or stop him from turning or running onto through balls. If all else fails the full back must stop the winger from crossing. Bocat nor Junior were close enough last night. the outer midfielders need to fill in the gaps between the full backs and the centre backs. You would think that Mr Pelach knows all this and must coach the defence to get into the right shape when the opposition have the ball. |
