Young local players, for some reason, we're not given any leeway back then by the crowd! 😳

It was always a bit of a media fallacy, mainly based on the re-signing of Stan. There were a few other "old" players like David Herd at 36 and maybe Jimmy McIlroy at 32 and Jackie Mudie at 31 but the majority of "old" players that the papers used to mention were 30 or less when Waddo signed them. George Eastham was just 30, Gordon Banks was 29, Dennis Viollet, Eddie Clamp, Maurice Setters, Roy Vernon and Willie Stevenson were all 28, Alex Elder was 26 and Peter Dobing was the grand old age of 24. You are quite right Waddington was over criticised for it, but then he would go and get Herd and Hurst which added fuel to the fire. Waddington set up the youth policy and blooded scores of young players. He also brought in many young players who I used to go and watch in the Central league but they never made it to the first team. He was also very cautious in the way he brought in young players, usually playing them away from home first, so they were not under the glare of the home crowd and have their confidence dashed. Some like Smith were long past being teenagers before they played for the first team. I remember chatting with Frank Mountford once who was frustrated that Waddington did not blood players sooner in the first team. Denis was still only 20 when he made his first team debut but I know what you mean. I used to watch quite a few Central League games back in those days. There was a lot of talent in those teams but before 1965 they had to be ready to play a full 90 minutes from their first appearance and even after when one sub was allowed there would still have been a temptation to put a versatile player on the bench rather than a youngster. The modern game with 5 subs from 9 on the bench makes it a lot easier to bring young players through without putting them under too much pressure.

A lot different in those days as top players would drop down a league because they couldn't afford to retire at 30.

I'd be chuffed beyond belief with the playoffs but my argument is that it'd be a huge build up if we're actually fun to watch and end top 10. If that happens we'd end the season with a stronger squad than last season right? Yea agreed as hopefully the say 7 owned players may stay or get improved upon. Its just is a big chunk of say 4 first teamers to lose every summer especially if they’ve done really well? Yeah I see your point mate! Mine is; thinking back to September 2023, were you as confident in our own players? I definitely wasn't! I'm thrilled to have a keeper and hopeful for Bocat, Junior and Tezgel. Plus I'm pretty confident in Sidibé, Burger, Bae and Manhoef. That's progress in my book. If most of them turn out as we hope and we finish top 10 then, as you say, we'd need 3-4 first teamers but that's still building up in my book.
