We certainly had a slow start but it felt at the time that we were finding our feet in the higher division and we’re starting to get a bit of momentum. Ever under dour Joe, we only missed out on the top six by four points in the end so it’s possible that we could have found an extra few points if Lou and Stein had stayed surely? We'll never know but wasn't looking likely when they left. Easy to assume it would have happened but we were nowhere in the mix at all at the time. Were the equivalent of say Sunderland last season Actually didn't we have a good home record under Jordan at that time? Yes he inherited a strong defence and a determined group of players and ran with it for a while. I remember a 1-0 home win over Leicester in front of the TV cameras where the fans got the team over the line. Toddy was bursting forward and scoring goals every week at that stage and enjoying a real purple patch of form. For some reason though, he chose not to spend any of the Stein money and kept faith with a striker pool of Regis, Carruthers and Gary Bannister. Lack of goals were our undoing in the end.

There wasn't any Stein money to be fair as think we received 300 k up front or similar. We were losing 14k a week which might not sound a lot but added up. We tried to bring a Scottish striker in who was at the ground but didn't happen. Name escapes me.

And to bring this back to the original topic, having Arnie in the championship would very much be akin to having mark stein in the 2nd and 3rd tier. It’s young persons parlance, it would be akin to having a cheat code. If we sign a promising young but inexperienced striker then the obvious thing to do is sign a quality veteran striker for on last hurrah to help that young striker 60 minutes here, 30 minutes there from Arnautovic would make the difference in enough games over a season for it to be worth it Would be a hugely popular signing, put bums on seats and help turn the atmosphere the right way Million and especially Bae would benefit enormously playing with Arnie

Didn't he score in 7 games on the trot fir Chelsea? Wasn’t that a record at the time? It was, beaten by Van Nistleroy I think.

If we had signed Yarmalenko would Hughes have switched Arnautovic up top? We really were dining at the top table of European greats at that time. Seeing Shaq and Arnie this week really does bring back some fantastic memories

The Pesch deal had about 4 structures to it up to somewhere like 750k . When we sold him back they forfeited money owed in a goals scored clause which I remember Moxey explaining after. Was something like £17,500 per goal scored every quarter or similar which doesn't sound a lot but think he had scored 9 or 10 in one spell . We tried to do a swap deal back to Birmingham with him but they weren't interested.

Best player I've seen wear a stoke shirt. Pity how it ended My assumption, apologies if I’m wrong. “Age”. There have been a number of players in “my lifetime” who I’d put in front of Arnie in respect of both quality and application (an all round player). Eric Skeels? Best Player……you simply can’t compare Gordon Banks (Goalkeeper) and Dennis Smith ( Centre Half) unless you add to your thought/decision making process their individual value to the team during their tenure at SCFC. In respect of Arnie the indisputable fact is that we should have a made a tidy financial profit on his transfer allowing for agents fee, signing on fee and wages. We bought him for £2M and sold him for £20M.

Understood it's completely pie in the sky and highly likely to be far too expensive nonetheless would be great if it wasn't those things The financial gap didn't used to be anywhere near like it is now, veteran players used to drop down the leagues which was far better than what they now which is either retire earlier than they used to or sit on big clubs bench hardly playing Sad

Games rarely sold out unless the top clubs , now the go on Summer tours and attract huge crowds in Asia , Australia etc. The salaries reflected the money the clubs took in

Yep true Many forget they were still paid way more than the average person . So many badly invested their money including a lot of ex Stoke players. Steve Staunton banked at the same place as me. He went broke. Invested in Irish film scene . Lost everything I remember Alan Hudson in the paper a kid sat on the gates of his house in the USA which he claimed he lost gambling

I don't get the whole social media thing anyway. I really don't care if someone in in a coffee shop in Ipswich having a scone or who someone is voting for or if their cat is eating Dreamies dressed as Liberace. Clubs should ban players from it, yep.
