I don't know lots about Islam and the different factions within it however I've went down the rabbit hole slightly this afternoon.
So from what I gather Shia and Sunni are the two main factions with Sunni making up near 90% of all Muslims around the world.
Shia Muslims from what I've read are generally a bit more liberal. No burqas, more peaceful, more tolerant, have good relations with other religions and just a less stricter form of Islam with some drinking and stuff.
What I found interesting though is it seems Shia Muslims are the majority in Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan and Bahrain. With significant amounts also in Yemen, Lebanon, Kuwait, Afghanistan too. In recent years Shia has also been growing in Gaza with hamas arresting members of groups associated to movement.
Sunni Muslims on the other hand tend to be alot more stricter and less tolerant of other religions. Following much more formal guidelines with women wearing head to toe burqas and what not. Countries with Sunni majorities tend to have terrible human rights and inequality. Qatar and Saudia Arabia being two examples.
ISIS, hamas and Al Queda are all Sunni Islam terrorist groups too.
The more I read about it all I'm seeing is that nearly every country which has had a Shia majority has been involved in a conflict over the last few decades.
And at the same time we seem to keep strengthening our western connections with sunni muslim countries and exporting lots of arms to sunni muslim countries. Which of course are then funneling that through to sunni muslim terrorist groups.
We seem to indirectly support less tolerant sunni muslim terrorist organisations who then start conflicts with more liberal shia muslim countries or factions. And then murder lots of shia Muslims in the name of fighting terrorists funded by countries we sell arms too.
I hope you all enjoyed my Ted talk today.

As your well aware the conflict in NI was not a Religious Conflict but split along those lines because one group were Second Class Citizens The biggest tensions in Middle East Countries is between Saudi and Iran and centred on who can have the biggest influence in the Region, rather than one being Sunni and the other Shia. Mostly they fund Proxies in other Mid East Countries to piss each other off e.g. Syria, libya, Yemen, Lebanon, Afghanistan etc Turkey is also a player and relations between them and Saudi are often strained despite both being Sunni. Turkey and Iran are not best Buds either but everyone hates the Kurds and Israelis of course so those are unifying factors. The West US UK EU etc like to sell stuff mostly Military Equipment in the Mid East and the Mid East Countries like to buy it to quell the local population and also to arm a veritable Alphabet Zoo of Terrorist Organisations so everyone is happy. Except Iran who nobody in the West will sell anything to. This goes back to 1979 when The Shah, or the King of Kings as he preferred to be called was toppled and replaced by a Muslim Cleric. The Shah was particularly good friends with US who didn't give a shit what he did to his people or how much he stole as long as the Oil kept flowing and Iran kept buying Military Equipment. The new regime who still hold power are not very popular either but they have similar methods to the Shah to supress opposition Of course the minority of Shia in Saudi and the minority of Sunni in Iran get hassled from time to time, but that mainly to piss each other off. Remember too that Indonesia has the largest Muslims population in the World mostly Sunni but the 15% who are not Christians, Hindu, Buddhist etc get happily along The Majority Muslim Country Malaysia take a different approach and forbid Shia due to the conflict it sees in other Countries but the other ethnicities Chinese 30% Indian 15% are freely allowed to practice there religion and everybody lives in harmony Drill down deeper and it becomes more complicated but I'll leave it there.

Didnt realise you were so profound and knowledgeable mate. Though it's more down to the country they're from than the type of muslim they are. Turkey and Pakistan both Sunni. Which is more Liberal? Iran is hardly a bastion of women's rights either. I'd stick to politics if I were you.
