Back then I probably knew every starting line up in the old first division! Now I'd probably just about name you a combined starting eleven from the Premier League most of who would probably be English! Same lol. Tony Currie was my favourite non Stoke player Hmm until he derailed our title hopes last game of the season! 🤬 Stan Bowles mainly because he took in good humour and eventually won over the Boothen after they mercilessly gave him stick... Stanley, Stanley where's your wife!

What I really can’t understand is, since we now have so called professional referees these days, why is the standard of todays officials so fucking shite!! This after all, is their full time job. I’m just wondering, if some of todays referees have ever played the “ Beautiful game “ and whether or not the F.A. should take a leaf out of ICC book and turn around and say, only ex professional players are allowed to become professional referee. In a perfect world, this would be a smart move imo but as we don’t live in a perfect world, it will never happen of course. The standard of refereeing from the grass roots to the top tier is absolutely shocking. We’ve always had incompetent referees but there seems a pandemic of the “ Arrogant, look at me, Gods gift to refereeing “ little arse-wipes, who are actually ruining the game. While I’m on the subject of referees, throughout this post, some appalling referees have been mentioned but I just wondering if anyone can recall their favourite referee. For me I can think of two, who were without any doubt two of the best referrers I ever saw officiate. My favourite all time ref. was Jack Taylor. A Wolverhampton butcher during the week and a first class referee come Saturday afternoon. A lot of posters on here would not of heard of him unless they are an old bugger like me! He was a no nonsense kind of bloke, always tried to keep the game flowing but woe betide any player who stepped out of line. If my memory serves me right, which it doesn’t always do these days, he sent off a German goal keeper, within a couple of minutes ( whose name escapes me ) for an horrendous kung fu kick, which, if it happened out on the street, a charge of attempted murder, would not of been out of place. The second ref. Collina, the Italian guy. Players knew that when he was refereeing, you simply don’t challenge his decisions. His stare could turn you to stone.

Rob styles was my favorite ref, to take target practice with a golf ball the cheating fat bastard.

Agree with you mate, shame more pro players don't go into refereeing. I wonder if there's any way to incentivise them, as it's probably not a very appealing prospect after being on the wrong end of the bastards for most of your career. It's a problem, needs some out the box thinking to sort out really. I do hazily remember Jack Taylor yes, and the hazy memory does have a good vibe. I definitely remember Collina! Haha he's like a cross between the Mafia and the Addams family...deffo wouldn't argue with that one!

Just heard that our very own ref of controversy Mr James 🔔 is a self professed Sheffield Wednesday fan!
Be interesting to see how he's faired in matches involving clubs in and around The Owls in the table?! Not that should have to question his integrity as a professional referee but some of his decision making processes involving our matches have been more than questionable on more than one occasion to say the least!
