I’m not a tree surgeon so this may be a stupid question, but I take it there’s no way to restore the felled tree back on its trunk? Not exactly that but they interviewed what appeared to be a knowledgeable fella, well he had grey hair, who spoke about coppicing. It seems this is a traditional woodland management technique that dates to the Stone Age. It involves felling trees at their base to create a 'stool' where new shoots will grow. You can recognise a coppiced tree by the many thin trunks or 'poles' at its base. He said that given it appeared to be a healthy tree there is a possibility this may be a success. I suppose we would have to wait another 200 years for the coppice to have any size though. So perhaps its quicker starting again wih a good sized sapling. Who knows! Ah ok. I meant in the sense is there any hope of putting the tree back on its stump - essentially locking it upright in place with reinforced rods or something. Otherwise, 200 years to wait… all because of some knuckle-dragging, low-life teenager.

Thinking aloud, if the tree had never been planted, would the relevant authority allow a tree to be planted in that spot today? Was it planted or naturally seeded ? I heard that it was a sacred miraculous tree. that had mysteriously appeared one dark stormy night, coincidentally when several strange moving lights were observed in the night sky in the vicinity!

Even though its completely different, I would yes . Well there was a lot of emotional attachment to many of those trees that were cut down, a sense of loss and a lot of outrage too, so some similarities. I suppose it was just more on the organised, corporate vandalism front. I feel there might be more to this story too, and some of the reports coming out now suggesting there might be more to it, whatever that may be.
[/b] What? Did the perpetrator perhaps have a genuine grievance and felt that the tree was blocking the light to his house 3 miles away?

Did a crookedly hanging picture or a tree out of place push him over the edge? Sad no matter how you look at this. There was a famous old oak tree in Alabama a few years ago that got poisoned over a college rivalry. People can be real morons when they want to be.

Apparently the tree was involved in the slave trade which is why it was chopped down. Which tbh I thinks fair enough if true. Eh? Even if that was true, what's that got to with the actual tree mate, slavery is a human construct? It's a 300 year old sentient being that has been hacked down, it's not a statue. Rome had slaves for thousands of years, you don't see Italy having statues and the like been vandalised. It wouldn't have anything to do with most of those slaves been white would it?

Two men in their 30s charged with criminal damage.
Hopefully, they get a significant sentence when back in court next month. Absolutely senseless.

I was thinking on the same lines. Whatever the sentences will be, they will be compared to those given to other crimes, and therefore give equivalency to other crimes. In one respect, it was "just a tree", but it's loss has affected a huge number of people to differing extents. Yet every day, far greater crimes occur that we don't give a second thought to.

I would say 2 years jail time, given the iconic significance of the tree. Obviously they'd be out after just one year on parole.

Get them planting acres of trees as community service. Yeah, I would say a long period of hard labour (a couple of years on every weekend) seems appropriate. Prison should only be for violent offenders (in my opinion). A lot can be done for society by forcing wankers like this to give back to the community that they have taken away from. In this instance, they should be made to work here: www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/places-to-visit/hadrians-wall/sycamore-gap/

OK can you name a more famous tree? edit: just seen feloniusssss post My go to would be the one the ride Hex at Towers is based on but I know that’s pretty local despite people knowing it from Hex. I just know that even locals think it’s made up and not a real tree. But it’s definitely real and if you ever go Ramblers Retreat you should walk to go see it

Don't think it was the most famous tree but it had great significance to many. 100's of people had there ashes scattered there after they'd been cremated. To those families it was like desecrating a tombstone. They're a pair of brain dead tw*ts.

Hard to believe that tree survived some of mankinds worst wars and other conflicts, yet 2 fucking brain dead wankers kill it. Im at a loss how people like that are allowed to live in the civilised world. Id hang the pair of them off the nearest available tree to it.
