About 18 mins in.
The year before I started going. Not seen this one before, anyone remember it? Seems strange seeing the roof on the butler street corner

It's a bugbear of mine that orange balls are no longer a thing. It probably wasn't needed at this game, but I can remember many occasions in recent history where an orange ball was necessary.

If only there was film, video and more pictures from our last game at theirs when we won promotion. I was lucky enough to be there. The noise in Nottingham train station awaiting to be escorted to Meadow Lane was deafening . What a day, brilliant.

Fuck off
Thought this was footage of the last day of the season, even though I know it doesn’t exist I still got my hopes up.
My grand god rest his soul used to tell me the story of that day, I never fully appreciated it as a young child. What I’d give to hear him tell it to me now.

Went up on the train with my brother and Southern Stokies, if my memory isn’t playing tricks on me. Started off at The Trip and went on from there. Mental when Richo scored. One of the great days 😀

My old man, in his 70s, casually mentioned in passing recently that he was there for that game.. I couldn’t believe it, he’s always been a Stoke fan but picked and chose his games and has never been to many away. I’d never have thought it. Got him to recount the whole thing.. I’d have been just about a year old at the time.

I was there that day and got a season ticket for next season. That day was a truly amazing experience and so glad I was there. I remember the ground going quiet when the fact Sunderland (?) had scored which meant we would not get promoted, the players realised from the reaction of the crowd I believe and a message was also passed to them. Then Richardson’s head appeared between defenders to put the ball in the net in front of the end where most of the stokies were! Wow I still get emotional!!

The noise in Nottingham train station awaiting to be escorted to Meadow Lane was deafening . What a day, brilliant. One of these days someone is going to bowl up on Antiques Roadshow. With a slightly grainy Super 8 film of that day. And of course one of the penalty spots from the County Ground. The expert (let's hope it's the rather dishy Christina Trevanion) will turn to the expectant Stokie and ask if he/she has any idea what it's worth. Naturally the Stokie will say that it's never crossed their mind. " Well", she will reply, " I think there will be a very healthy market on the Oatcake. And I would have it insured for at least..." dramatic pause " 8 or 9.." further dramatic pause " pounds." The Stokie will then try to hide crushing disappointment, before slinking off camera, utterly crestfallen.

Seven of us went in my clapped out Mini and not even the Nottinghamshire Constabulary, who pulled me over in Nottingham city centre for excessive honking 😂 could spoil the day!

“Quick as a rattlesnake” 😂 Could’ve come out of the mouth of Nigel Johnson that one. Proper commentator was Hugh who remains my all time favourite commentator to this day, none of this false made up screeching we have to endure now just because someone passes a ball or scores a tap in.

What a day, brilliant./quote I think something similar is the case for the final game of the 1946/47 season when Stoke just missed out on the First Division title. Of course, there was no TV or video possible but I think it's the case that even photographs of the game don't exist. I was thinking what a tragedy it would have been IF we had won that game and there were no photographs of the occasion!

Still a head scratcher that no footage exists of the away day in Nottingham Why? Back in 1979 there was minimal TV coverage of football (a couple of games on MoTD and 3 on Star Soccer) and no brief highlights in the sports section of the news programmes. Almost no-one had a "portable" video camera to make their own recordings. (I used a borrowed one that year to record a training session. It came in a box about 3 foot square, weighed a lot, only recorded in black and white and cost the company that owned it a few grand). At the time I can't remember being in the slightest surprised that we didn't make any of the TV programmes that weekend.

Drove to Nottingham with my much missed Dad. Stokies everywhere on the route once we were through Tean. Derby was a steady stream of red and white.
Got to Nottingham early, one of the ground staff at Notts Co was talking to us saying there will ‘only’ be about 20,000 Stoke fans.
Then there was the phantom penalty taker before kick off in front of the Stoke fans
The game was pretty pedestrian until the rumour went round that we had to win and there were only a couple of minutes left.
I was in the paddock, with Stoke fans to the right and could see Durban across the pitch urging us forward. As the cross came in (Crooks or Randall?) I could see Big Bren with a clear header at goal from a tight angle. I couldn’t believe he headed the ball away from goal and a grumble strangled in my throat as Richardson darted in from nowhere to nod the ball home.
Did Notts Co even kick off again?
Then the pitch invasion with the tannoy announcements that there were further youth matches to be played before the season ended. I often wonder how those games were played when half the pitch was stuffed into pockets and was on its way back to Stoke!

There is footage of games from 78/79 that exist in the archives that probably haven’t been seen since back in the day. Sadly Notts v Stoke in May 1979 isn’t one of them. In fact, I don’t think I’ve even seen more than six press photos from that game either.
