Same answer as I got when I asked him to back up his decree that Sterling is good going forward. No surprise there! The thing is, Brown WAS involved in several of our recent goals...it's been written about on here...but he won't accept anything positive about his favourite whipping boy, and I really can't be arsed giving him the info

Any player should be able to trap a ball no matter where they play He can trap a ball He can trap a ball further than I can kick it 😉

Gayle has done it a few times where it has but I can't remember Brown doing it.

I was going to start a thread on Brown today.
Not so long ago, we had a player called Mame Diouf. He split supporters down the middle because he was clumsy, ungainly and appeared to miss good chances. However, he did score his fair share of goals, was a tireless worker and found himself playing in all manner of odd positions thanks to his determination, work rate and attitude. Whenever he played, we would suddenly start creating chances left, right and centre and he would miss the odd one. When he went off, we would barely even register a shot at goal.
Today, we had Jacob Brown in a position that many have said is impossible in our team. A seasoned goalscorer like Gayle has struggled to make much of an impact there and the ball seldom drops to him. Jacob Brown plays up front and all of a sudden, it's chances galore. He probably should have snaffled one today, but that happens now and again. If you look at the stats - this is also true of his header in the week at Boro - his finishes in those positions gave him a better chance of scoring than the average player who finds themselves in that position, but they didn't come off. He'll score goals because he continues to find himself in positions where he gets good quality chances of the kind that myseriously don't fall to any other player in the team. For a player who isn't the biggest, he also gave Hanley a torrid time today.
Much like Mame, Brown is clumsy, ungainly and desperately underappreciated. It's not a coincidence that our upturn in form has come when he has moved back to the forward line. It's not a coincidence that he's a critical part of an attacking unit that are pressing so effectively that a decent outfit like Norwich can't even carry the ball out of their own half. At present, he's an indispensible member of the team.
We've got the makings of a great attacking united with Campbell and Brown next season. We just need to think carefully about who will come into the side to play alongside them.

As the team generally has got better, he’s become really badly exposed. We are a decent centre forward away from being a really good team, neither Brown or Gayle fit the bill at the moment but we have no other options.

She's threatened too clock me one, a few times. She can see now we've got a few decent players in, if we want too make the step up he needs replacing. Keep him on the bench though.

He’s an incredibly frustrating player. I can see the arguments for his inclusion; you do need a smattering of Jacob Browns in any successful squad. These are players who work their bollocks off and brute force their way to a relatively high level in the pro game as a result. They are the epitome of “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. It’s why managers love them. It’s sending a message to the gifted players that, if they don’t apply themselves then this guy who isn’t blessed is going to take your place. It’s no coincidence that the wheels fell off for us in the premiership when we lost our workhorses and replaced them with talent that didn’t work hard.
On the other hand I can forgive the missed opportunities to an extent. But the 2 on 1 in the second half was shocking. If he had a modicum of composure/sporting-intelligence* then that’s as easy a chance to create a 1 on 1 as you could ever wish for. It was harder to get wrong. (*I’m not calling him thick, I have no idea about his general intelligence he could be booksmart as fuck, but IQ and sporting IQ can be wildly different and his sporting IQ is clearly below average)
Interestingly, I had a look at transfer market website to see smallbone’s value, and was shocked to find that two of our most valuable players are wilmot (£6m) and brown (£5m). For context, Campbell is only worth £3m.
I’d snap hands off for £5m for brown.

I like Brown and think he’s done a decent job for us in the last few years in a struggling team. But last two matches have definitely shown we need an upgrade in summer if we are targeting promotion/play-offs.

If we’re serious about a promotion push next season he shouldn’t be anywhere near the side, he’s absolutely hopeless.
The three big chances he missed were bad enough but how he messed up that two on one with Campbell was probably the most amateur thing I’ve seen all season.

I think he takes that often used phrase "got to hit the target" far too literally. I often think he aims to hit the keeper, bless him.

For me there was one stand out moment in the game that completely summed up Jacob Brown, both his assets and short comings. He did really well to intercept a corner routine with a header on the edge of our box, broke at pace over the halfway line, had Campbell in support. Instead of playing Campbell into the space in front, to run in clear on goal, his pass was under hit and allowed their defender to tackle Campbell.

Yesterday perfectly encapsulated his failings, we’re in a great position on the breakaway and he’s got to play a very simple ball into Campbell and he completely fluffs it.
If it was a one off then fine but this sort of stuff happens all the time with him. He’s got his positives, tireless worker etc but we really need someone better than Brown next season, he’s not good enough for where we want to be.

Brown is a proven goalscorer but as Bayern so often says, he's best at putting the ball in the back of the net when he doesn't have to think about what to do. I would certainly keep him but what we want is a player up front with presence of mind to instinctively know where to find that space where his header/shot has a great chance of scoring. Haaland at Man City is the perfect example of what I mean. Some of his goals are unbelievable. Shawcross made a good point on RS yesterday when he said that there are natural goalscorers in the lower leagues that have that same ability even though they may not be Championship level in their general play. Although they're rare, they do exist. Two perfect examples of that are Vardy and Toney.
OS.
