The summer is absolutely massive, a real crossroads for the club, the recruitment by and large has to be spot on, anything less than a top 10 finish next season would not be acceptable. We could be needing as many as 10 new players in the summer, which is a massive ask.

Neil confirming he wants to bring in a target man in the summer in his pre-match interview
"We'd like more variation in the squad in terms of personnel. We lack specific positions and specific personnel. If we had them, it would be a completely different ball game"
"I understand the frustration when we want to turn the ball forward to get the goal, but we don't really have an out-and-out target man to turn the ball to.
"It doesn't mean a target man is going to play every game and he's the solution but in specific games, that is a good way to play because you bypass all that risk in working the ball up the pitch and when you put all those crosses in, you've got someone with the presence to win you a header and score you a goal"
"The best teams have different ways to win games. Unfortunately we're not quite there
"Are they hard to get at this level?"
"Not at this level, no. If you look at most teams in this league. Nobody would look at Burnley as a team that turns the ball for a big target man, but Rodriguez and Barnes are big 6-footers, aggressive and good in the air, can take the ball in with the qualities needed to break certain teams down"
"You look at Luton with 2 big solid targets they can turn the ball forward to. Even Millwall with Bradshaw despite him not being particularly big - and we didn't cope with him as well as we should have early on with the direct balls down our throat"
"But that's just one element we're lacking"

JPB looks to be starring in Cardiff's revival. He'd be an interesting target for the summer maybe? You'd think we'd have a lot more finance than Cardiff www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/fallout-cardiff-citys-great-win-26390951Philogene a cut above
It was an absolutely sensational performance from Jaden Philogene on Saturday and one that makes you forget that he is only 21 years of age. The youngster ran the show for the Bluebirds and was absolutely everywhere, in defence and attack. The 22,000 fans inside the Cardiff City Stadium didn't need to know the stats to recognise he was the best player on the pitch by a mile, but they make for impressive reading as he topped the charts for most dribbles completed (four), most duels won (four) and most tackles won (also four). The Aston Villa loanee just kept running and even when those around him flagged, his strength, speed and determination to keep the ball moving kept Cardiff in the contest. He was one step ahead of everyone else on the pitch and looked dangerous every time he was in possession as he chose the right pass nearly every time. And what about the goal? Something made completely out of nothing as Philogene received the ball in a non-threatening position before dribbling past Josh Dasilva and Anis Mehmeti and firing a low strike from 20 yards, which left O'Leary well beaten. With Villa reportedly set let him leave on a permanent deal when his loan in the capital is up, if he can keep up his recent performances under Lamouchi, he may become a must-buy come the end of the season.

How many players do we realistically need in the summer 6-10?. Possibly more. With the likes of Edwards, DWP, Powell and Baker possibly gone plus the 7 loanees, that is 11 squad places straight away. 12 if Jags calls it a day. 13 if we need a better keeper backup that Bonham. And then the manager wants an additional big centre forward. That’s 14.

JPB instead of Brown would be a very good start. Brown would keep JPB out of the team for atleast 50% of games despite being technically poorer. The front 6 at the moment are pressing very well and I cant imagine JPB will do anywhere near the same as Brown. Good for the games where we cant break teams down though.

If we lose the first 3 I don't think we need to directly replace them as they haven't played that much, even Baker in the present set up is behind Thompson, so you could even question whether he needs to be replaced. Hope we keep Jagielka and Bonham for some squad consistency and firmly as back up. The player I'm really not sure what we do with is Tymon. He's an outstanding attacking full back and could play where Ty has recently, but that seems to work right now and if Tymon needs to defend at full back you know he would get targeted.

There was an article in the sentinel interviewing Pearson sometime before the last match, which I can't be bothered to find! He sounds very much like he's planning to be here next year. Yeah, he seems to like living back in the north-west and working with Neil. But suppose it all depends on what Bournemouth think in the summer. Not getting in their 25 doesn't scream of them having massive interest in keeping him with only 1 year left on his deal and having used him sparingly, especially if they change manager and continue looking at sexier options with their parachute money. But keeping him around is probably a possibility. www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-ben-pearson-transfer-8213806“Getting back to where I’m from has been nice, with friends and family, and on a football side it’s been nice to play games again. It’s taken me a couple of games to get up to speed and the legs have been feeling it after each game but I’ve settled in well, I’m enjoying playing. “I think I understand how he works, the tactics and philosophy. I think he trusts me in that position, knows what I’m capable of and when you have the trust of the manager and he trusts you, it blends well and you enjoy your football. “Since I’ve played under him, I’ve had that trust. He’s made me feel one of the better players and he tells me what I’ve been doing right or wrong. I’ve learned a lot in four years under him and feel like I can play my own game with him as my manager.” He is only on loan from Bournemouth, where he has another year under contract beyond this season, but that doesn’t mean it’s all about the short-term at Stoke. “First and foremost we need to get as far away from relegation and being comfortable in this league is the priority,” he said. “That’s the least expectation. Being a bit more dominant in games and having a platform for next season to really kick on and show people what the club is made of and its ambition. “There are players in the team who will be here beyond the summer who can propel them higher. It’s embedding the philosophy of the manager and taking it into next season but first and foremost it’s about solidifying and making sure we’re in this league next year.”

Yeah - Tymon's going to be an interesting case as we have seemingly made a decisive and probably permanent switch to a back 4 going forward. I can't really see him as an option wide left in the front three. So it all depends on how Neil sees him as a left-back in a back 4. It'll be interesting to see if he offers Fox another 12 months too

It'll be interesting to see if he offers Fox another 12 months too Yeah, he tends to prefer players that have more defensive bias in midfield and defence so Tymon doesnt really fit. Im not a Fox fan at all, but he has been a consistently average, average+ defender for Neil, so he deserves a new contract. Also helps to keep the player turnover down a bit, which is important with so much of it going to happen this summer.

Really like to see JPB back here next season if we're going 433 I thought that he started really well and then fizzled off. That’s probably expected given the age. If Villa are happy to sell, I’d actually be surprised. They must think that he hasn’t done enough to warrant a look in next season. He is exactly the player I’d want to bolster our wide forward options (if he could add some end product and consistency).

I'd take Philogene yesterday. You could tell he had serious ability when he was here. Didn't always show it but typical of younger players out on loan and not too dissimilar to Smallbone this season.
Good player.

Obviously got no future at all there, and will probably be Championship-bound after not being able to play any football
