The word “turgid” is a regular component of sentences here on the Oatie.
Out of interest a question to those who include the word “turgid” in their posts (1) is it simply a fashionable term, (2) do you use the word (as necessary) in everyday conversation, (3) if not why not? and (4) is it simply an Oatie word
Personally as someone coming from a Senior School background I never get confused with such terms “as a load of shit”.
Just interested

I use it in everyday conversation.
It’s also a pretty standard word in the football vernacular.

This thread has caused me to look up the dictionary definition of 'turgid' and it is not as I had thought.
Turgid: Excessively embellished in style or language
I have always deployed it to mean awful as in 'it was another turgid display from Alex Neil's hapless charges'.

Just looked up the meaning and must admit it doesn't quite mean what I thought it meant. I thought it meant kind of dull/bland/featureless but not so! Beat me to it.

While we are on words beginning with 't' then 'tawdry' is a word I would like to see used more often.
'Gianni Infantino presides over a tawdry administration at FIFA'

Great question!
Turgid seems to be a flowery way of saying turd, as in 'you can't polish a turd' ... maybe that's where the confusion lies!?
(It was for me).

(of language, writing, etc.) boring, complicated and difficult to understand
Definition as above in The Oxford Dictionary.. The Cambridge dictionary says 'boring' So pretty much used in the correct context I reckon

If used as an adjective, moribund is a more apt description! 😞
Saying that, we've come from a goal down in the last two games and are finally going to piss this tinpot league!

Insipid?
Moribund, that's an interesting one. Always thought it sounded like an old Nazi organization.
"He was about to be released at Nuremberg until they proved that he had joined the moribund at an early age."

The Cambridge dictionary says 'boring' So pretty much used in the correct context I reckon Yeah that’s what I took it to mean, tedious, directionless, a slog. Think the binary season, the last couple of Pulis and Hughes Prem seasons apiece, the second half of the last couple of MON seasons.

Toxic and rotten are an Oldham Athletic or as were Charlton Athletic etc etc You’ve lost your mind Bayern….Stoke City football club is not toxic It absolutely is. We have sunk so low from a position that was so stable to a place where we could realistically go down to league one and are lucky it hasn’t happened already. That should never have been a thing with their wealth and the stability we had. You clearly don’t like it when people criticise the terrible owners.

You are, your replies the thread LGH started show that. And they are. They don’t do it on purpose but their uslessness seeps into every pore at this club and breeds the culture. A culture of delusion and laziness. Toxic owners are ones you feel that drag your club down. A club without the Coates seems an infinitely better proposition than one with them. Spare me the bullshit about the debt they created through their awful dealings as an almost blackmail why we need to keep them.
