He shouldn’t do but imagine the pressure on the manager to play him if it actually happened and they got to the final. He’d be the most hated person in the world if he didn’t start him, especially if they lost He's surely won the argument by replacing him with a guy who scored a hat trick Be amazed if Ronaldo starts the semi final For Ronaldo to make the starting line up for the final a lot is going to have to happen If it's Argentina and Portugal in the final, I wouldn't put it past FIFA putting some, ahem, "pressure" on the Portuguese manager to start Ronaldo due to the epicness of a Ronaldo versus Messi final.

Great day of football again. Looks like we will just have to beat Argentina in the final. That would be the ultimate 1 up on them. Having said that, I’m not one for conspiracy theories but you’d have to think it was a bit fishy if Argentina and Portugal get to the final. Messi v Ronaldo in their last World Cup as a ‘battle of the GOAT’s’ at a place where they are absolutely fanatical about both of them. Stranger ‘coincidences’ have happened. That’s how the World Cup ended up in Qatar in the first place. We had this discussion in the pub tonight….. it doe seem that ‘the gods’ are aligned to give both players the chance to show once and for all ‘ who is the best’ ( Still think Pelé is better than both of them)

Surely Neymar would fit in there somewhere and an Argentina v Brazil game would be the most watched game of all at any point and didn't happen.

Exactly. How many people are saying it’s the best World Cup in a long time, entertainment wise? Imagine the legacy of having a Ronaldo v Messi final which would be billed as ‘the two greatest players of all time head to head in their final World Cup to prove who is the GOAT’ The manager just could not drop Ronaldo for it if it was to happen. If it was to happen then it wouldn’t just be Fifa in on it. The hosts clearly want to make a statement. A messi/Ronaldo finale would have been more likely than a nation like Qatar winning the World Cup bid and then holding it in winter. Like I said, I don’t wear it tin foil hat, I don’t believe the earth is flat or most other conspiracy theories but if it does happen then surely the integrity of the sport would have to be questioned once again.

The dropping Ronaldo has already been done though, he aint getting back into the team after their performance against Switz. He won't start tomorrow so presuming they win he won't start the semi. By the final nobody will be expecting him to start anyway.

You’re right that a peno shootout can’t be fixed but Messi not getting booked for the handball was silly, considering all the strange yellow cards dished out, the fact that anytime Messi was touched was a free kick is bizarre. The free kick in the last 5 seconds of the game had to be given. It was blatant. I’d have loved to see the odds on the free kick being scored at the death of the game when you’d been the poorer team by far over the last 90 odd minutes. As for neymar, he doesn’t come close to the Messi or Ronaldo argument. In my opinion, there’s not many players as overrated as he is that I can think of in the past 10-15 years.

Yeah, I can’t see how you could drop a guy who’s come in and scored a brace for an old man who’s been shite for 2 years.

Never wanting to be fair to the Argies, Dumfries was causing aggro with at least one penalty taker as he walked up to take their spot kick (possibly Fernandez who missed). Hence the picture on the last page.
But they got Dumfries worked up so...😁

Christ a heated game and a player reacting to two people in Davids and Van Gaal who are renowned cunters. Absolutely nothing to see there. Bar maybe some deeper Barcelona politics which would be cool to know about.

Brazil v Argies would have been the biggest match up of all, Neymar being in the same class or not. Is arguably the biggest game in International football and if they wanted to rig a game to happen...would have been it. Is absolutely nothing to suggest any shenanigans took place anyway. Messi and Ronaldo were simply in separate parts of the draw and nothing at all odd in that.

In fairness Dutch were being absolute shitebags too: That’s when you do your talking with a win, not react like graceless cunts like Argentina have. They were giving it the Dutch during the game, and the Dutch tried to put them off during the pens. But what Argentina should then have done is shown that they are better and gracious in victory, they chose to sink lower. Utterly classless and I hope Croatia smash them.

I'm not surprised Argentina players reacted like they did, if that was England I would want our players to do the same after the way Netherlands conducted themselves during the pens.

Yeah watching that video above the Dutch got what they asked for. Van Gaal is horrible and there will be celebrations in the Netherlands today that they have seen the back of him. Most Dutch fans couldn't stand him either. Worst team to watch in the competition.

In fairness Dutch were being absolute shitebags too: Any so called sportsman who feels they need to resort to sledging to win a match is beneath contempt. The Dutch deserved to lose after that. I hope FIFA take up the matter with their authorities and the guilty players are punished. Their behaviour is a national disgrace, I hope the Dutch people express their displeasure with their players.

Not that it was a good look, but the Argentina taunts after the win were something to do with how van Gaal treated Riquelme back in the day.

I simply cannot understand why Holland had Argentina beaten by lumping the ball forward but reverted to the unproductive tip tap garbage that had led to a two goal deficit.
Similarly, England were making no headway against Senegal playing the tedious tip tap rubbish but immediately scored two goals once they started playing proactive long ball football.
The secret to this World Cup is getting your defenders launching the ball 80 yards at every opportunity to overcome this silly press that is now the in vogue.
