Found this video fascinating - Hanley on a Saturday night at 11-30pm: I’ve not been for years - in fact last time was when we lost to Croatia in the World Cup semi final. Growing up though in the early 2000s through to mid 2010’s I was there plenty of times - Monday, Friday and Saturday on a lot of occasions (castle on a Wednesday). Those streets were full, queues outside the bars and clubs - Jon parkin sat in the takeaway (other Stoke players out including those who’d left and come back for a night out - always remember seeing James O’Connor and Clive Clarke out one night for some bizarre reason) It’s absolutely dead though now and quite sad to see. Does anyone on here ever go now for a Friday or Saturday night? Wouldn't even entertain Hanley on a weekend night- if we go out round here it's Newcastle, Stoke or sometimes Burslem (although Burslem's dropped off too over the last few years with the loss of The Leopard and The Swan etc). This despite Hanley actually being closer to get to. There's nothing even on 'the periphery' of Hanley whereas you have Hartshill, Basford and Penkhull connecting 'castle and Stoke making it a damn good pub crawl. Any new craft beer/gin bars open in Newcastle and even Hartshill- why on Earth would you open one in Hanley when the local proles just want shit like Carling and Strongbow on offer? Even The Quarter would rather focus on Stoke and close it's Hanley site. Hanley's just about ok for a bit of shopping in the day, maybe a midweek curry when you can do 'spoons, Coach and The Woodman and go home before 11 (assuming you can still get a bus) I genuinely think they should promote Stoke town more as a drinking destination- get the students in with Spode etc. Hanley is finished, and hard to believe it's the same place people visited from outside SOT in the 90s/early 00s At first I thought that video was misposted and should be on the Ukraine thread. The only time I set foot in Hanley is gigs at the Sugarmill, now Terraces do collection in castle that's about all to go up there for. I can walk to Stoke, Hartshill and Castle from here, weirdly I don't use Penkhull pubs though I was regular in The Terrace when Joe kept it. I'm either train to Stone or Manc. Any of the stops on the way. Even fucking Crewe has a better beer scene than Hanley!

I got talking to someone who’d been tasked to look at Stoke-on-Trents “brightest” youth and how to go about retaining them in Stoke-On-Trent once they’d finished University, in a nut shell the people who’d been carrying out the study (boring drab people must admit) gave up looking at it and fully expected our “brightest” students would up and leave Stoke. Positive they didn’t even conduct the exercise.
Can’t blame them really

We went for a meal at Portofino last month and it was busy outside Fiction nightclub (not that I've been to a club in Hanley for 20+ years!)
If I'm local it's either Hartshill or Newcastle, although that's mainly pub drinking. Always used to enjoy getting some work done by the fire in Lymestone Vaults on weekday afternoons - that's gone as well.

Now we realise what they meant by levelling up.
It was a codeword for another multi-storey car park.

I go as far as Pockets in Hanley and that’s it, horrible shit hole and needs leveling completely rather than leveling up. By the time you’ve pissed about sitting in traffic as I was Saturday by TFI Friday’s is it?? I could pop on a train to Manchester and have a proper full day out and feel I’ve enjoyed myself. As you must be well aware there were traffic problems around the Festival park site last Saturday due to someone fucking up the roadworks That junction you refer to is one that you invariably sale through unless the lights are on red.

I'm not saying it doesn't come with danger and you have to be wary as that can happen in the nicest of places.

Won’t be popular with the oldies but we really need to do away with the outdated 6 towns and create a modern, fit for purpose city centre.
The sad thing is the most appealing thing about the Potteries now is it’s central location and being accessible to Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham
Work choices aren’t inspiring either, you can have a good career at 365 but outside that it’s JCB or a warehouse. It’s no surprise that so many of us join the forces then fuck off

I still have no idea what it was they were trying to achieve 🤷

Does anyone on here ever go now for a Friday or Saturday night? Not to say that this video is inaccurate, but Hanley on a Friday was never really a "thing" 10-15 years ago. It was certainly a lot busier than that shows, but would never say it was heaving when we used to go out (2006 - 2016ish). It used to be Newcastle on a Friday, then Hanley on a Saturday where both would be absolutely rammed. However, there is no way it's like that on a Friday and absolutely buzzing on a Saturday. There's just fuck all there! Like you, I think the last time I went out was the Croatia World Cup game in 2018. I'd love to have been of that vintage to see Valentino's, The Place and the like as that sounds like a proper golden era. Even then, back in 2006 there was shitloads going on. It started to die off I'd say in 2014/2015 time when clubs starting closing then reopening under different names every other month. Now it's completely dead. We went to Newcastle after the Burnley game and that was spectacularly dead too. Sad really. Do young'uns even go out any more?

( well it was when I went to visit my Dad back in October) Both very good pubs with decent beer gardens for the summer and about 100 yards between them, or staggering - about 300 !

Alsager is good mate. Latiffs and Bank Corner are at one end of the high street (there is also Casters restaurant, 55 degrees wine bar and a place called "The Bar" at that end as well) but if you venture down past Latiffs, there is 3-4 good pubs - a (reasonably) new Bod bar that has opened, the Mere, Ay Up Duck and the Lodge which is 3 mins crawling distance from my gaff. The Lodge in particular gets very busy and there are quite a few old stoke faces that get in there. In between those pubs, you have a couple of decent restaurants including an Italian and another curry house Indian Heaven. That road is now known to us locals as the "Alsager Strip"!! If people come in on the puffer train then the Railway is a good choice as well (the old Yeoman)

The Place used to open at midday on Christmas eve, very busy as the Banks and workplaces shut and everyone piled in for a few before going home for a rest before the evening started again.

I go to Hanley once a week to meet up with an old friend for a few pints. Shocked at how derelict and sad it now looks. I'd suggest that the decrease in disposable income is a major factor.

I went to Newcastle after the Burnley game too.
Edwards/Lakota/Missoula/The Kiln, now Slug & Lettuce, wouldn't let us in at about 00:30, saying it was bookings only. It was dead inside. Just proper backwards behaviour, actively discouraging custom and money. The rest of the town was dead also.
Piccadilly got it right for a good while but its downfall was nowhere stayed open past midnight.
