It's October 6th and despite a couple of moments of weakness, I've not put the heating on yet.
The long johns are ready to go on as we get closer to winter and the electric blanket is seeing some action. how many of are trying to tough it out until November or longer?

Mines kicked in. Noticed how homely it felt after getting in from a long day at work. Lovely feeling.

My thermostat is set to 15. To my horror I woke up this morning and the heating was on! Gonna have to turn it down to 14 I reckon. I’m living on my own so luckily I can put some extra layers on without being moaned at by some Whiny woman😉

We are in a multi generational house so it's becoming difficult.
Sofa blankets are a new thing while watching TV and the old dear is permanently dressed in one of those oodie things.
I put it on for a hour to check it wasn't broken, but so far so good.
What a time to be alive!

Still not put our heating on, the log burner has had a hammering though and is on most nights! The neighbours patio set might not make it through the Autumn 🪓... 😁 I usually wear t shirt and shorts through the winter but this year I have invested in fleece joggers and a toasty warm hoodie! Let's see how long we can keep it off for!

As much as it was nice to come home to a warm house i was shocked at how much the smart meter was on when i looked at it. Need to change the timer on my heating as well.

We have sold a boat load of teddy fleeces, throws and dressing gowns on our place these last few weeks.
Reckon candles will be selling out next.
Crazy to think this is the 21st century and hard to believe we are meant to be one of the world powers, yet we are talking black outs and energy shortages.
Madness.

Having to use candles during the power cuts in the 1970s is still a period as a kid of which, I still have fond memories. Like my dad at the time, if it happens again this winter, I will not enjoy the power cuts as much as my kids.

Has the log burner on a couple of evenings just to air it out really. Makes a massive difference.
British Gas keep overestimating my gas usage, I have to keep putting them right. Robbing bastards.

Same here mate. Bought one of those fan thingies that sit on the top and works from a motor driven by a thermocouple. Got it for£9.99 at Aldi seems to work ok.

Not done so yet, got a couple of electric heaters, not fans, that we've warmed bedrooms with but relenting as long as possible. Wife got us a load of weighted blankets last year and they're good and I work here alot and will doubtless put my footy thermals on when needed. I too remember 70s and feeling like it was an adventure when dad was stressed to fuck, very much not fun when you're in his shoes.

It’s 13C at the moment outside folks and we’re talking about heating and blankets. It’s mild at the mo.

No heating on in my house yet. The wife uses a blanket at night watching the tv and I just have a hoodie on and my jeans (I’m usually in t shirt and shorts). Gonna hold off as long as possible…I’m putting as little money in the pockets of those thieving power companies as possible. My sister in law has been told by her energy company that she needs to pay £450 per month on her direct debit…she told them no way…robbing b@#£&*%s.

Turned the central heating down to 17 degrees and timed for just 90 minutes at 7am to warm the bungalow a bit. Here’s the thing…..it came on for the first time this morning (it’s mild down here in sunny Devon) but it still felt ok at 6.30am when I made a cuppa. So turning it down to 16 degrees and see how it goes. We pray for sunny days in the winter because the bungalow faces south with lots of south facing windows which really make a massive difference during the day even if it’s cold outside. The trick is to close the curtains and blinds just before sun disappears and trap the heat indoors for a few hours in the evening. On these type of days we can delay the log burner until late afternoon for a nice cozy evening.

I have a Hive system which I've re-programmed today so that when we leave the house in winter time for short periods, it turns the heating off for us so we don't have to remember. We have a combi and have all but stopped using hot water too, dishwasher goes on for plates and wash hands with cold. at these prices small things make a difference.
Crazy how much we are having to do in 2022. I don't care what we had to do in the 70s, it shouldn't be happening today end of story. The world is going backwards.

I'm an advocate of the hive system too, we have the temperature set at about 14c and that seems okay in a 2 bed semi considering we both work from home. Similarly we're using hardly any hot water.

I just about remember the power cuts in the 70's.. we then moved to a house with no central heating or double glazing.. and it was awful.. here you are 50 years later and quality of life is about the same.. incredible. Having to wash with your hands with cold water in the UK unless you are absolutely destitute is unreal.

As a tight-arsed Spartan I have always refused to put my (oil-fired) heating on until November. No problem so far this year. I filled up the tank during 2020 summer lockdown, when it was 18p litre. I made it through til now - nearly £1 litre. My concerns are more environmental than financial. Anyone who thinks they have a right to sit around in shorts and tee shirt in a British winter deserves the financial punishment they get.
Think global, act local.

Yep, I'm surprised at what some are saying they are now doing, they've just been wasting money and at the same time probably moaning about big corporates

They're my shorts and t shirt....I will wear them when I want! And for the record I always wear shorts and t shirt through the winter, and with regards heating, we never run a warm house as I can't stand it when rooms are too warm, I always end up with bedroom windows open and arms and legs hanging out the bed (even in winter)

I also wear shorts and tee shirt in our house all the time. This is due to having two 90+ year olds who we care for living with us. Big bills on the horizon methinks😳
