Bit one-dimensional. You need some creativity from the middle as well. Baker and Laurent have the capability to create. Liverpool's 4-3-3 springs to mind..................... Baker and Laurent are more functional than creative IMO. Think Laurent will end up playing as the deepest midfielder and Baker is more box to box than one necessarily for vision and splitting defences. Liverpool a fair point, their creativity is mostly from the wide positions at full back and from the wide forwards, and Firmino is the closest they've had to a central creator. Though even Klopp has sought to address that a bit by signing Thiago and giving Elliott more game time, and he wants another midfielder as well. Not sure our wide forwards are necessarily the creative types unless Campbell can get back to how he was. I think it would be a mistake to send Smallbone back either way.

It would obviously be down to negotiation, but if we say a player isn't going to get much playing time the loaning club may prefer to 'reallocate' him elsewhere?

I'd keep Smallbone to be fair, at least until Powell has had a run of games until the January window, I'm sure if he's not getting regular game time Southampton will step in at that point anyway.....

Can you do that if you’ve already played? As long as he hasn’t played for anyone else this season yes. Players can play for no more than two clubs in the same season.

Stoke beat competition from Preston to bring the Cobham academy graduate in under manager Alex Neil.
Sterling has less than two years on his current contract in west London and the level of performance this season will dictate his future.
Thomas Tuchel likes Sterling and has used him in a host of pre-season games over the last two years.
However, with spending up to £250million at Stamford Bridge this summer, Sterling will have to be special to break into the wealthy new Boehly-Clearlake era.
A successful loan could also attract further suitors next summer with a Premier League move a realistic prospect for next season.

So who is going to provide any creativity if Powell gets injured again? Sterling and Tymon........... Or Laurent or Gayle

What has Clarke done wrong? I think he's looked pretty good.

Or sell Thompson and Clucas? Who is going to buy Clucas? Excellent solution but improbable. Sorry, Smallbone and Kilkenny should both leave today. We sold Sam Vokes didn’t we? I rest my case your honour…

Perfect signing just what we need. I wonder if one of the other loan players will be sent back to accommodate as we have too many for the matchday squad when all fit? No surprise if Kilkenny left today. I would move Smallbone out too. Smallbone changed the game last night. Can't believe you want him out.

I don't get the concern for a sixth loan player. OK one won't make the match day squad but no one ever says "Why are we signing an 19th player we can only have 18 in the match day squad. Two of our loans are injured, one for a lengthy period. Others will get injured/suspended and if all 6 are fit that just creates competition for a place in the matchday squad. No different from if he was a permanent signing.

Sterling and Tymon........... Bit one-dimensional. You need some creativity from the middle as well. Which his where Samallbone comes in he was appalling v Boro so I think people (fans/posters) have written him off based on that thought he played well enough last night, he's clearly the cover for Powell can see why Kilkenny might be 'one too many' though he's OK, protects the ball very well but he's going to struggle to get in the side even allowing for injuries & 5 subs

wing back competition is now Sterling,Fosu & Clarke for RWB
Right back, Sterling, Clarke an Edwards (?) with Wilmot and then Duhaney
think we can all see Fosu is a natural winger (either side too suspect as he's a dribbler) 442 is now a viable option

I've not heard of this guy, but a RB was probably the most pressing outfield issue.
Defensively that gives us 2 options in each position.
Clarke Wilmot Flint Tymon Sterling Taylor Jageilka Fox (Souttar)
Unlikely we'll see much of Souttar this side of the World Cup, but if he comes back from Qatar fit and raring to go (assuming he's recovered in time) then we can either free Jageilka or give him another 6 months in order to loan Taylor out, if that's what we feel he needs.

Klopp's midfield 3 is pretty narrow and workmanlike most of the creativity comes from the FB's getting very high up the pitch and the three forwards. IMO it's the best football in the country to watch so I'd be very happy for us to use that as a blueprint. Last night might have been a form of 433 but certainly nothing like it we vacated the centre of the pitch and had a strange lop sided shape.

I'd never heard of this guy before, but he sounds exactly what we need in the RB/RWB position. He's certainly fallen off the radar, considering he was a regular in the Championship last season. Surprised he has never come up in discussions before on this board when suggesting RWB options out there.
For info, he created 0.54 chances per game last season and made 5 chance creating carries over the course of the season.
