To be fair why would the interviewer recognise him? I worked with a guy who.played for Everton and younger fans wouldn't know who he was, personally had no idea myself until looked him up . Because you're an ex player doesn't mean people in the street will know who you are. This is an ex Everton keeper, not a Bob Latchford etc . Not saying that should just pointing out that time dims the memory. As Stoke fans we would probably still recognise an ex player for us years later like bumping into Gleghorn in Asda for my generation. For my kids it will be Shawcross or Wilko icons for them but not for a Norwich or Villa fan for example.

Do younger people today care about John Wayne or Rita Hayworth, Elvis or the Stones? Pong the computer game or Video recorders? The way it is.

I see Matthews as forgotten because some people rely on stats too much. How many Ballon d'Or's would Matthews have won if the award existed before the 1950s? In general football circles, Di Stefano seems to be more fondly 'remembered' than Matthews, yet aged 41, Matthews beat a 30-year-old Di Stefano to the first-ever award. The Internet and how much Wikipedia is updated for current players also means more current players will be remembered as greats. Many top players of the past barely have a Wikipedia entry, yet every average Joe (no pun intended) has a detailed entry these days. Very few They’d of still found a way to split it between real and Barcelona

It could possibly be a massive penis Probably those horrible long sausages you got from the chip shop for a snack when the ball was out of play.

Zola, Bergkamp, Inzaghi, van Nistelrooy, Drogba, Henry: any forward who existed during in the time, or immediately prior to the beginning of the Messi/Ronaldo era, who must be the only two players on the planet since early 2000s. They’ll all be forgotten in years to come. Great players are not forgotten. As for Matthews/DiStefano above. No comparison. DiStefano played and scored in 5 successive Euro finals for arguably the biggest club in the world, scoring in each. Ok the opposition weren't great but Matthews never performed on the biggest stages, European Cups/World cup etc. Did he play in the USA defeat, not sure? Stan Matthews playing in his late 40s destroyed the world champions Brazil including Pele. Not only did Matthews set up all 4 of England’s goals he destroyed the Brazilian full back to such an extent he couldn’t cope and left the field in tears.

I would like to throw George Best into the mix. Another amazing player.
And then, of course we have Gordon Banks and Lev Yashin.

To be fair Matthews Peak was the 1930's when the FA deemed World Cups of no importance Matthews did play in the battle of Highbury match when England beat World Champion Italy 3.0 but hard to equate with later eras Matthews was the first football g superstar known around the world, sadly nearly all the footage of him is during his, lengthy, veteran phase i.e. When at Blackpool not at his Stoke pomp as such we judge, incorrectly, on the footage we have Similarly if there was more footage Di Stefano would be regarded even higher Older, now mostly dead, Argentina fans when asked who was better Messi or Madonna replied Di Stefano

Given the WC is expanding to 48 teams would like to see 1 spot given to a FIFA team made up of players of nations who didn't qualify Manager picked by FIFA, manager picks the squad Bit likr Barbarians in RU Could be great fun E. G. Halaand wouldn't miss out Appreciate this is fanciful bollocks and won't happen but like to see it

Matthews' superb match was in 1956 but Pele was not in team (though Didi and Amarildo were). Made his Brazil debut in 1957 just before sensational World Cup in Sweden in 1958

Bale will go down on that list due to how his time at Madrid has ended. Like him or loathe him he is a modern day galactico and will never be forgotten There's more footage of him last season than for Matthew's entire career and thats including the fact he hardly played at club level
