Gone are the days of getting the nurse to syringe your ear for free, so after two weeks of olive oil and other drops, I've got to get them done privately. There are a few places to get them done, but 60 bloody quid is possibly worth not hearing the wife properly. Any recommendations at the budget end of the spectrum?

You will find that is a good and standard price. You have to take in to account the training it takes for an audiologist to do this. The medical side involved to make sure it’s safe and that no damage is done. The cost of equipment ( it’s not a syringe it’s either micro suction r an irrigation machine). The cost of the premed is and staff. The fact it can take up to an hour but may take 5 mins. In that hour an audiologist could sell £2000 worth of private aids. Yes I was in the industry.

So they don't use a length of thick dental floss between the ears?

Do it yourself with an Otex Express Combi Pack. I can vouch for these 100% A few days of drops in the lug hole, and then swoosh away with warm water. It works superbly. Boots linkI just checked....... It's cheaper at Amazon than Boots, if that's of interest.

Get some £5 birthday candles from Wilkos, rest your head on a pillow and ask your wife to follow the below instructions

I bought a pair of Klipsh bluetooth earbuds for watching tv and not disturbing the missus if it was something she didn't want to watch.
After a few weeks only one bud seemed to be working. I reset, recharged, rebooted, reconnected - all to no avail.
Reluctantly I did what no self respecting red blooded make does - I checked the instruction. One of the suggestions was 'Check for earwax' - and bugger me there was a bloody great pellet blocking the bud. Got rid of that and sound was perfect again.
So that's my suggestion - clean your ears while catching up on Glatonbury/Wimbledon/Tour de France at the same time.

I had a bad case of ear wax earlier this year. Did a quick E-consultation with GP and she said never try ear candles as they can cause permanent damage to ear drums. She said buy some medical grade olive oil and persevere for a week or so. It eventually cleared the wax. Don’t risk trying to scoop the wax out with cotton buds either as loosing an end in you lug hole will definitely mean a trip to A&E.

Having my ears syringed is one of life's greatest pleasures, so I'm gutted it's no longer available at the GPs. I had micro suction back in January for the first time. Not painful at all, but not as enjoyable as feeling water trickling through your ear canal like a babbling stream. It was more like a mini Dyson cleaning up my ear. I wouldn't say I noticed a great deal of difference in hearing, but that sloshy feeling of wax build up was gone. It cost me £65 for both ears, so I'd say that's the going rate.

Foolishly I asked the wife to get a splinter out of my hand, idiot butchered me with a sewing needle, bled like mad and knackered when she literally removed layers of skin nowhere near the splinter. Surprised when the splinter popped out a few days later on its own.

On the subject of ear wax removal, I remember about 12 years ago I bagged a right bit of skirt on a night out and of course lured the victim back to my sett. Next morning as the sun rose on a post coital euphoria, I heard a voice say eloquently “what the fucks this?”. She was holding what looked like a malteser. Under closer inspection and the sniff test it dawned on me that it was in fact a huge ball of ear wax that had escaped my lug hole possibly on the vinegar strokes. I said “oh that’s cool, it’s a ball of ear wax”. Funnily enough she made her excuses and left fairly quickly, don’t think I’ve seen her since. Anyway I digress……

How do you know if you have too much ear wax? Do you leave nasty discharges around, can you not hear? I just don’t know what’s considered too much and what the symptoms are. What are the benefits to clearing it out as I assume the ear produces wax for a reason?

Had mine syringed at the Doc's a few years back, the crap that came out was amazing, I had spent years sleeping with earplugs in tho cos of shift work which might have caused it. Afterwards, for a few days, just putting a cup down on a worktop sounded like a gun going off I'd gone that deaf

Got to be careful with the ear drops and swoosh method. I'm currently suffering from water in the ear...been in there for a month now. Wake up in the morning and the left ear is muted. After twenty minutes or so with head upright, the water will drain and I can hear clearly again. This the second time this has happened to me after drops and squirting water in there. Last time took a couple of months to fully clear out. Sucks, but no doubt it's well earned karma.

What are the benefits to clearing it out as I assume the ear produces wax for a reason? I had tinnitus and muffled hearing that was diagnosed as earwax build up. Ears have glands that secrete wax into your ear canal to protect the eardrum from infection by dust particles. You also have tiny hairs which in my case are excessive which causes my ears to block with wax which I clear with medical grade olive oil.

(Do it out loud in a 50s Music Hall/Vaudeville accent. You’ll kill I promise)
