Probably Baker, as a gesture of good faith.
However, it’s a meaningless title nowadays.

Don't think that would help the player at this time.

Don't think that would help the player at this time. I think it's just a piece of fabric to be honest. Ryan was fine when he got it.

Personally, I'd give it to Butcher, Baker, or the Candlestick maker.

Baker with Jags or Soutts as Vice would be my guess.

He was as much as anybody and it was never clearer than those first two Hughes seasons just how much he was doing in that regard. Not every captain needs to be a John Terry type, demonstrably clapping his hands vigorously and showing vein-bulging, sinewy pashun every time there's a camera on him.

Didn’t it used to be that they acted as a go between for the player and the manager? From many reports I’ve heard, including Shawcross, they do little more than organize a party.

That's ignoring the first few seasons of him being captain when quite arguably he wasn't even the dominant partner between the centre backs.

It's not a matter of what function they perform to my mind it's more a matter of something you can't stop happening. Social creatures form a hierachy done right it's just formalising something that's going to happen anyway.

Just because there were other vocal players in the team at the time doesn't mean he wasn't a good captain, he did fine. The point you're making is precisely why the armband doesn't really matter - you'll always have a hierarchy and natural leaders in a group, which negates the ceremonial bestowing of a bit of cloth on one of them.

Yeah like I say, done right it's just the manager giving consent to something that's going to happen anyway.

I think Baker would make by far the best captain. But, if Allen stays, I suspect he will keep the job.

I think centre halves generally make better Captains. Not sure it’s for Souttar so maybe Jagielka although I can’t see him playing loads of games, Flint perhaps? I guess if Allen does end up staying it’ll be him😫
