Plenty of formations don’t allow for that role. Target man is not his best role but as things stand he’s the best target man we’ve got. I hope that situation changes. Then we should be playing a formation (3-5-2/4-2-3-1) that allows us to play our best player in his best position. Man City aren’t likely to play Haaland on the left wing very often next season. I always favoured 4231 but our stats for all the formations we used last season and I think 4231 were the worst of the lot. I quite like 3 at the back Conte style but MON’s not brave enough with his WB’s and makes it too negative. If we sign the two high energy midfielders from Reading I could see us going 433 and although it’s not using Powell at his best I could see it being better to watch.

With Laurent potentially signing and having already secured flint will this see us go to a more direct style of play?? I really hope we don't get Mons version of pulis ball And what we have been watching these last 2 seasons has been any better ?? No it hasn't however it's not asking much to at least try to coach the players to pass the ball and it play it more vertically and quicker through the lines at a higher tempo.

I am being funny but I’m not 😂 it’s a genuine question that I don’t know the answer to….why were they so shit? Edit - “they” being Reading Didn't Middlesboro get relegated and we signed Huth and Tungay from them, not too bad them 2? We did. But having an engine room that’s so good and a team that’s so bad? Just seems counterintuitive.

I don’t get the this is shit so we might as well go back to the other shit argument. It’s like any sort of aspiration is just completely alien to many.

Sounds more like Sawyers than a DM? How so? This guy has played centre back at times, his defensive stats are strong, he’s busy and energetic? To be fair, I know very little about him apart from that he seems to be quite highly rated. It sounds like a good signing on the face of it and I'm not intending to criticise. I'm just noting the more recent comments about his best position being as a playmaker and O'Neill's general preference for a Sawyers-type to sit deep and dictate play.

Sounds like he’s primarily been used for Reading in more of a defensive role but can play box to box or further forward as well. A bit like Baker in that regard. Sounds like we have the tools to play a balanced midfield now, provided we can get some positional discipline instilled.

If Rino signs as well our midfield could be a truly different beast next season. Should bring the energy and physicality we so desperately required.

So Reading had Laurent, Rinomhota and Swift but were in a relegation battle all season?.. the rest of their side must've been made up of pub players then judging by how good you lot think their midfield is/was.

I don't think we've had a French player before? Our best player in the last 40ish years? That's true but I needed that line for my bad joke. Change to 'First French player since Steven N'Zonzi'. It's still a bad joke, but hey!

Probably because every formation excluding ones made up by Tony Pulis include a centre forward.

I really like the kind of players we have signed and are trying to bring in! Big physical players which are a must in this division! Flint signed, Laurent close, a big strong striker with decent pace and a right back and I won't ask for more! Hope to see Etebo, Afobe, Clucas and Fox leave, and I won't be too disappointed to see Allen go either. .....................Powell....................... ........Baker......................Laurent....... That is a decent midfield trio as I see it!
