Same here - my dad said "what the hell is that tripe" ? Thinking back he'd have only been about 40 at the time.

I had a similar experience, albeit with a different artist…
“What’s this… Oh Shit”, I was asked.
“It’s the b-side of What Do I Get” I answered.
And what a cracking wee tune it is too - all 92 seconds of it!

50 year old today. I knew I'd got a classic in my hands the moment the old man gave the critique " What's this shit you're playing" About 49 years ago the family were watching Nationwide on TV and a feature came on about the general mayhem surrounding Bowie’s Aladdin Sane tour. You know one of those stories to shock the adults. I’d got a ticket to see it and I was shit scared my Dad was going to say I couldn’t go. Anyway back on topic thanks for the reminder. I’ve just got my copy out to play it later.

50 year old today. I knew I'd got a classic in my hands the moment the old man gave the critique " What's this shit you're playing" Nice interview with his Spiders from Mars drummer, Woody Woodmansey on 6Music this morning. Which you probably listened to, being a regular! Last of the Spiders still going.

Ziggy and Hunky Dory. Both classic albums which have definitely stood the test of time. One of my brothers, who was a little bit into cross dressing at the time, could pull off (oooh matron) a pretty mean Ziggy Stardust. Sadly, but predictably, it led to a lot of discomfort with our dad, but that’s rock n roll. Anyhow, happy birthday Ziggy Stardust. Edited typo. Ooops

Bit of a random one, but as some of you will know I'm originally from London, and as kids we had family just outside off the A3 near Kingston /Surbiton. We'd drive down and always turn off at Tolworth that not only had a big tower but on the roundabout we'd pass a pub and later bowling alley called the Toby Jug, which had a fabulous pub sign. We went to various cousin's birthday parties at the Jug in the 70s too. Only recently did I discover that the Toby Jug was actually the site of Ziggy's very first UK show so would be 50 years ago also. I can never drive past Tolworth without very happy memories from back then.

Just listened to it all the way through for the first time in ages.
I’d forgotten how great it is. Stunning from start to finish. Songwriting at its very best.
Its actually got quite an easy listening non-edgy sound to it which I really like and it does benefit from being played loud (as recommended on the cover).
I’d not noticed before that the three up tempo songs are all sequenced together in the middle of side 2 (with only the title track between them).
I’ll be playing it again tomorrow!

I never quite got the Ziggy Stardust thing.
Aladdin Sane and Hunk Dory are my 2 favourite Bowie albums.
The 'Young Americans' album ended my flirtation with David Bowie, there was no coming back from there. 'Heroes', just no, 'Let's dance', give it a rest mate !

Five Years. My most bestest Bowie song. I'd go with Rock and Roll Suicide. I remember when the Aladdin Sane Tour came round it was initially declared that for some reason Bowie wasn't going to do the big gigs in Birmingham (which in those days was the B'ham Odeon) or Manchester (Free Trade Hall), but he was going to do Wolverhampton and Hanley, which ensured maximium ticket sales for those venues. I went to the performance at W'ton Civic Hall. Bowie did 6 costume changes. Later in the tour it was announced that he would do Birmingham and Manchester as well, plus a few other added dates, and they were all sell outs. Note. I think the tickets were about £12 each. This was the 70's.

I expect I'm confusing things. A friend i texted said try £2!

Five Years. My most bestest Bowie song. That was the song he was meant to do at Live Aid Was a band from Belfast, The Outcasts who did quite a mean cover of it many years back.

I misread read that as reading it in his voice, which I did every post after Orbs prompted me to. It is quite exaggerated in my head, influenced by Brydon or Coogan's versions on The Trip.

This was the 70's. 12 quid? Bloody hell. In 1980 Floyd tickets were 8 quid and that was considered mind boggling I can clear this one up. The tickets were £1.50 each. By-mid 1973 the long-running Ziggy Stardust tour had turned into the Aladdin Sane tour (that LP had just been released in April 1973). I went to the gig at the Liverpool Empire Theatre on 10 June 1973. He played twice there that day and I went to the afternoon show. My school mate Rosie got the tickets and I do remember paying him about £1.50 out of my pocket money. I just googled it to confirm and here we are, someone (not me) trying to sell one of those £1.50 stalls tickets on a memorabilia site. www.rockpopmem.com/David-Bowie-Bowie-Ziggy-Liverpool-Ticket-1973/70606.htm
