I was always amazed at the in depth game analysis the players used to be able to shout out in those Comics - and that front page is a good example ! Reality always seemed to provide a little more ‘basic’ language 🙂
(I remember being a Scorcher reader from its first edition and being a tad peeved when it fell into the hands of the much bigger Tiger !!!!)

Peter fox is the one I remember for gk You got a better memory than me mate I loved those years when was 16 getting train with me mate from wakey to Stoke games priceless Banks was my childhood hero but I found some old school books the other month when clearing the loft out and I’d got photos of Garth Crooks on a couple of them😄So many fantastic memories around that time and especially being on the pitch at Meadow Lane celebrating promotion with my late old man Same here mate…what a great season that was…me and my dad and his mate went pretty much every away game in an old Vauxhall Victor estate…it was brilliant.

Billy's Boots!! It's all coming rushing back to me!! Simple pleasures of sitting down and reading a comic serial on Thursdays (when they were on the shelves in country Australia). Billy's Boots, Hot Shot Hamish, Jimmy of City, Jack of United, and Nipper were all favourites. I had the full set of JET comics at one stage but my brother thought it was a good idea to nick some of them to sell at his school fete....the set was never complete again.. Tiger wasnt available locally, but one year when we were on holidays, the local newsagent had a few on sale so I stocked up...only because Gordon Banks was the columnist. Simple pleasures...

Anyone else remember the slightly older "Score 'n Roar", part of which morphed into Scorcher? It had comic strips such as Peter the Cat, Phantom of the Forest, and Nipper. Attachment Deleted

Don't remember Score'n Roar - as a lad I used to have the Victor every week, and a few others when pocket money would allow. I always made sure I got the league ladders every season though.

League ladders were an absolute pain. Fiddly, tabs easy to lose, league places changing constantly at the start of the season.

The Victor did have one of my favourite all time characters in it tho in Alf Tupper - the tough of the track Won race after race despite having to hitch hike to athletic meetings and all on a diet of nowt but fish and chips!

Alf Tupper was superb, and it's exactly as you describe, although he often bowled up at a meeting after a 25 mile bike ride - but would nevertheless win the race. He was a welder by trade, and would invariably arrive at the track with his running shoes wrapped in newspaper. In a similar vain was Harold "Haddie" Hadley. He was a top player, but was a trawlerman and that was his priority. As a result he would sometimes leave the pitch early in order to land an important North Sea catch.

Worries me slightly that I could do these easy - the current squad would be tricky. I think that's normal for those of us of a certain age! Childhood memories tend to stick firmly, more recent ones less so. And perhaps we're slightly less invested in the team, and football in general, these days? Looking back at these comics, which I used to love, it never occurred to me to question the amount of time the players had to have quite a lengthy dialogue with each other as an opponent ran at them

You still had Clydebank, Meadowbank Thistle in them days. Clydebank are still with us in the West of Scotland League. Meadowbank are now Livingston in the Scottish Premiership, and Edinburgh City play in their old ground.

Viv Busby really was Barry Gibb. Still has my pen the bollox. My first ever autograph and put my pen in his pocket. I just remember he was wearing green lensed glasses. A mate of mine lived in York back in the day and managed a club and said Busby and John Byrne were a huge hit with the ladies at the time

The Japanese...Aiyeeeee as were dying I agree on the extent of the vocabulary gifted to the poor Japanese soldiers. However, I think the Germans could also say "Englander Pigdog", and (if there was aerial combat, as there invariably was) "Shpitfeuer". I may be mistaken but in addition, if they captured a brave Brit (often 8th Army), didn't they occasionally chuckle contemptuously: "For you Tommy, ze war is over"?

Never took to Victor for some reason. Good to see we'd moved on from the war 30 years after it had finished!
