Trump, Biden, Putin, Xi, Jong-un, Orban, Bolsonaro….or President Blair or President Johnson even!
I’m not a big fan of the monarchy, but the alternative as an elected head of state to our Queen reminds me every time which side of the argument I sit. God (who I don’t believe in) save the Queen. Long may she reign.
Here’s to the best Head of State on the planet, and a lovely long bank holiday weekend of celebrations and fun with friends and family. Not even the miserable republicans can complain about that!?

Drew back the curtains this morning to see union jack bunting up in our road, which was a joy to behold.
GOD BLESS THE QUEEN

The Queen has been a fantastic head of state for 70 years. It gives our nation huge soft power in the world. It's hugely important to separate head of state from head of govt You don't need a monarch for that You choose someone you want, we rely on the monarch not being an arsehole Imagine Andrew as Head of state

It's hugely important to separate head of state from head of govt You don't need a monarch for that You choose someone you want, we rely on the monarch not being an arsehole Imagine Andrew as Head of state You are absolutely right. And logically I completely agree we should not have a monarchy…..But I see absolutely no circumstances where the Queen or our monarch could seize any real power. Their role is ceremonial. Whereas if we voted for our President, we could end up with Blair or in the future Johnson as head of state. Do you think for a minute they would accept their role as ceremonial? Would they respect conventions? No. So give me a ceremonial head of state which can never seize power any day, over an elected head of state with the ego to try and seize some power. The Queen is the ultimate piece of evidence to show the system works. All the problems with our system of governance comes from a first past the post electoral system, an uncodified constitution (which means corrupt leaders get to decide whether or not they are corrupt, or unethical or in breach of the ministerial code) and (arguably) an unelected House of Lords, although the latter is debatable given they always cave to the elected house and so arguably it means our elected officials can achieve more, but undergo scrutiny, which is the entire purpose of the Lords.

However we shouldn't forget that throughout history our monarchy has thrown up some right fuckwit's and tyrants. In fact but for his loins taking him to the bed of a divorced American socialite we would have had a Nazi sympathiser on the throne in the run up to WW2 - and who knows how that might gave turned out? Just as not all presidents should be likened to Trump or Putin, one should not assume all future monarchs will be like Elizabeth.

That could be said about any political party, organisation or royal family. Let’s just celebrate the present.
