20 years ago today since the announcement Gudjon Thordarson's contract wasn't to be renewed.
It was surprising in the wake of promotion but, in reality, wasn't as controversial as it may have seemed.
Thordarson had been fortunate to survive after the Walsall fiasco the year before. The aftermath of that catastrophic night at the Bescot hung heavy with a lot of us. We'd managed to get promoted with a mind boggling injury list and we all acknowledge having to battle such adversity. However, overall, there's no reason to believe he'd have coped with the second tier and it's varying challenges.
In addition to the football side of things there was talk of various acts of impropriety within the club. Of course you can't trust everything you hear but to believe 25% of the rumours (and I know the people who's word I trust) it was grounds for dismissal regardless of any on the pitch matters.... as it would be in many other professions.
This means it's also 20 years since Zidane's brilliant goal v Bayer Leverkusen! I got phoned up to tell me about Gudjon as I was watching it!

I Have nothing but good to say about that man. He fought his own Board vehemently for what he wanted at Stoke which I think ultimately proved to be his downfall. After that we were lucky to get Tony Pulis

Remember being gutted about it initially at the time but it was in hindsight 100% the right call.

Yep you can't throw out 'impropriety 'and not even give a single clue as to what or indeed who ?! You can see why such rumours might abound since its quite a stunt to win promotion and get the sack for your troubles. I thought it was more a case of the financial crash near bankrupting our Icelandic owners and he was their man But my memory may be playing tricks with me, I could be out with the my time lines

The Icelanders on the board were completely split into pro and anti Gudjon camps

The relationship has steadily deteriorated almost since he arrived and it had become untenable. He also made pretty hard work of promotion - as great as it was, we really shouldn’t have been relying on rectal miracles to get us out of that division.

Fair enough, he never looked the argumentative kind unlike Boskamp, but I reckon he could be stubborn as a mule :-)

For the level we were at in the era we were he laboured to gets up with plenty of resources.
