What’s the difference between a vale supporting woman and a pilchard?
Ones all greasy with big bulging eyes and the other is a fish!

Think it’s good for the city the higher up both clubs are. I think the rivalry thing is what young’uns or immature people get involved in personally, if you read Ian Wright’s book he says he could always understand banter etc between Arsenal/Spurs or Liverpool/Everton etc but when he was involved in a Celtic/Rangers clash he realised it was no longer football but hardcore and nasty ….. I think it’s all mindless wanting Vale to fail ….. IMO

Ideally we could go with Vale dropping down to Hanley Town’s level so we can win the Champions League!

I know a lot of Stoke fans say “yes but when Vale were higher than us they really rubbed it in” but how often is that? One season in every 20? 25? I think we can allow them that little period of glory, after all they’re the f….ing underdog!! Just like that time Norway beat England and the commentator went on and on about Churchill, Thatcher etc Years later I visited the national stadium in Oslo and they were STILL playing the tape of that commentary in the changing rooms as motivation. (Perhaps MON ought to use Pottermouth tapes to motivate our current crop of players?) The underdog mentality is also displayed by us e.g. when we thrashed Liverpool for Steven Gerrard’s final game, it’s only natural Vale like seeing us struggle but as for us wanting to see them struggle ….. we’re better than that!!

I think there has been some cross-fertilisation over the years such as Mark Chamberlain switching from Vale to Stoke and the likes of John Rudge, Mike Pejic, Jimmy Greenhoff and Stanley Matthews working for both clubs. I think Vale fans’ so called hatred for us is more like pantomime booing and hissing when the baddie enters the stage?

When we lost the FA Cup final it was like they had won it. I mean we’re in an FA Cup final while they’re scratching around in tier 4, they were in no position to be taking the piss… the level of hatred they have is just weird.

It is actually a game with some significance as opposed to Stoke's whose games long since lost all their significance.

But aren’t we just referring to the moronic element? Any Vale fans I know who are switched on, articulate and know the game inside out are not very interested at all in what Stoke are doing?

Unfortunately at the moment I feel that there's also Stoke "fans" who aren't interested in what Stoke are doing.!
Mind you that's not a reflection on our super team, but just apathy.

We no doubt have done something stupid again over here to deserve this. US foreign policy has garnered us a lot of repulsive stuff over the years.
Thank God I'll be at work.

As I said earlier: it’s all down to the downtrodden/underdog mentality…… e.g. how many Scots, Welsh + Irish fans like seeing England do well? Not many!! But when Gareth Bale scored that free kick for the Welsh recently I imagine 50% of England fans loved it

Sold out home ends apparently for first time in 32 years. But capacity only 15'000 now. Includes 4500 in the away end. All out of the woodwork as per any club I guess.

Love it if they lost to a telford goal and he ran around shushing the home fans. If only carlsberg did season ends to shit seasons..

Maybe you’re lucky and know the good one 🙂 I only know one and he has no problem with Stoke. He actually goes to Stoke games but he is Scottish and likes a drink or 20. He's good friends with a couple of ex players as well so I guess helps. I still don't know who their manager is, probably should Google it one day.

I think to have a go at Vale is as pointless as a Liverpool fan saying they hate Tranmere or a Man United fan saying they hate Bury - pointless

You'd probably feel differently if you grew up in Burslem/Tunstall like I did. Most of their lot are obsessed with Stoke and I don't think 'hate' is too strong a word for their feelings toward us. After a while you just can't help but feel the same way towards them .

To be honest it's all relative to when you started going to Stoke or your age. Those similar age to myself will recall an annual pre-season friendly. Think I'm right we beat them 6 once ,Jeff/Geoff Cook filled his boots . Any animosity started in 89 when they reached The Championship and lasted a decade. I know one or two including a really good mate who goes most of the games. I can only go off him, he clearly doesn't like us, however has always said give him Stoke any day over some touristy type walking around in a Man Utd or Liverpool top. And really it's ironic when we say they are obsessed with us when despite nobody caring we are already on page 4.
I can't stand them but I'm with my mate when I have more respect for someone who follows a proper club through thin and thin instead of claiming to be a huge fan of one of the big boys. Do I hope that they stay down, of course, but I'd hardly call play off failure a shit season when last year they nearly went out of the league.
