I have been following Stoke home and away for 50 years. Away matches have always carried a bit of jeopardy (...if you were there, who can forget the battle of Burnden Park in 1977 when at the final whistle enough house bricks came into the away end to build a small bungalow?) but the biggest threat to life and limb now comes from our own fans. Yesterday I was sat in row 5 and got hit by a smoke bomb after we scored; large bump on my head, jacket ruined, and lungs full of thick red smoke for the many seconds it took me and those next to me to vacate our seats. We all know that some of our young lower-IQ knob-head fans make pond life look like University Challenge material, but how the hell did they smuggle those smoke bombs past the security searches? Just goes to show that the searches are a waste of time.

Life bans for anyone found with pyro or smoke bombs.
Absolutely fucking vile things.
Hope you get better soon.

There was indeed a lot of what the press would refer to at the time as 'loose masonry' flying around at Burnden Park that famous day!
Plainly it's not a good thing to be clonked on the head by a stray smoke bomb but in the round you are far safer today.
I didn't mean that to sound unsympathetic but it's true, albeit it didn't help you on this occasion!

'No Pyro, No Party' is the mentality of some of the đđ's who are brave souls taking them in and setting them off! But never proud enough to hold onto it and let it waft around their own space are they?! Of course not, the 'big hard boys' daren't get caught with them so they launch them into a different area for someone else to have to deal and put up with the after effects of!

I'd be pissed off if one hit me but I quite like the smoke effect. I guess those with asthma etc might not agree!

You only have to look at the scousers at Wembley on Saturday to see how widespread it is,Iâd ban anyone using one or taking one in for a very long time

The pre match entry search was the usual tap down arms/side and bags opened when i arrived an hour before KO when only a few fans going in, but to stop smoke bombs it would have to be more detailed.
The group having a good pre match sing song on the concourse let one off which drifted down the narrow concourse.
Did not see the one mentioned above and i was near the front rows, hope the OP is ok.

Bit of smoke and the blokes up in arms. On the whole continentals tend to use flares as opposed to smoke designed for war games. An observation ..sat one from the end of a row close to where one landed after being thrown yesterday The issue as mentioned above is although they fill the stand with smoke theyâre often thrown by the instigator to ensure pardon the pun theyâre not caught red handed ..In launching them, invariably they land amongst more âgentrifiedâ elements of our support .. but more tellingly get trapped under the seat / feet of where they land ..so whilst the instigator gets a few whiffs others get the full force literally at their feet .general .stewards seldom remove them now , rather they wait either for them to finish or for the trained fire steward to deal ..meaning the smoke continues to billow at a rate of knots at some poor saps feet for some considerable time .. as happened yesterday with the one that landed near the stairwell where the Stewards where standing ..I presume the stewards were the target but fellow Stokies not them took the full force as the majority of the stewards just moved away to the concourse for the duration.

To be fair, there is no better sight than watching âofficialsâ clearing bog roll of the pitch. We definitely need a full on big roll day last away game of the season. They arenât hurting anyone!

Let hope you didn't go our Europa games when split and besiktas set them off, they filled the stadium. Jesus from all the shit I've read on here this tops the lot. Bit of smoke and the blokes up in arms. My colleagues and I in the FSA I spend a lot of time defending fans, both in the media, and sometimes supporting and representing fans in clubs' hearings or assisting with legal representation if things get as far as the courts, and I'm certainly not against a good atmosphere, but I'm afraid I strongly disagree with you on this. In a closely knit crowd and particularly a crowded concourse ( as occurred yesterday), they are dangerous and anti-social. The OP mentions being hit on the head - that's being hit on the head by a very hot, heavy metallic missile, which could do serious damage. They cause real breathing problems for asthmatic fans, and there were frightened children in distress yesterday. They stink and make your clothes stink. In short throwing them away from yourself into a crowded area of other fellow stokies is irresponsible, selfish and anti-social. Quite apart from all that, they are illegal and a breach of ground regulations. If you are spotted throwing one, either directly or identified from CCTV, you are likely to get a criminal conviction and a football banning order. Let's not blame the turnstile stewards for not picking them up in the searches - the responsibility lies squarely with those who brought them into the ground and threw them. Please, just stop it lads - we don't want to have to end up trying to support you against a ban and a conviction.
