So to recap then:
Joe Allen - New contract offered, looks unlikely to stay. Steven Fletcher - Gone. Tommy Smith - Gone. James Chester - Gone. Phil Jagielka - 6 Months signed. Mario Vrancic - renewed Nick Powell - renewed Ince - Gone. Thompson - renewed Brown - renewed
All loanees (5) not retained or an attempt to resign - Gone. So in total including loanees we have lost 9 players (10 if Joe heads out). Some we never used (or once for a last minute sub appearance). So while we clearly don't need 9 new players, we clearly need at least 1/2 of that. Interesting times, 5 key signings that will make or break next year.

What's the crack with Clucas btw? Does he have another year on his contract?

Whose to say we won't try to resign any of the loaners later in the window?.

The lad who went to Bournemouth from PNE and can't get a game. I forget his name. Rothwell Saywers. Elliot Anderson on loan from Castle Give DWP a bit of time of there and he could become better Ben Pearson. That’s him!

OK if it's that easy name some realistic targets who would be an upgrade on Allen and Vrancic. The lad who went to Bournemouth from PNE and can't get a game. I forget his name. Rothwell Saywers. Elliot Anderson on loan from Castle Give DWP a bit of time of there and he could become better Pearson would add some bite but he's not actually a particularly good footballer and if he can't get a game at Bournemouth he's hardly proven himself as top end material. Bournemouth were after Rothwell at Xmas so that's doubtful. I like Sawyers but it looks like Bruce wants him to stay and they still have their parachute payments. Eliot Anderson - a 21 year old loanee punt? OK so we are into pulling names out of the hat and hoping for the best? DWP - play a youngster who hasn't established himself in the team out of position and hope it works out? And anyway he looks nothing like a midfielder. This is pretty desperate stuff. Vrancic and Allen are good players at this level - the fact of the matter is they will be hard to replace given where we are in the pecking order and the constraints of FFP. I'm not saying they are irreplaceable but you are under estimating their ability and the difficulty we are going to have in finding better replacements.

He was one of the best players in the Championship at Preston. Countless players we’ve signed in the past from this division haven’t been getting a game and then were excellent for us. He bossed more than one game against us for them.

What about a 'pinned' "Retained, Released and who knows?" thread? Just difficult to keep track

I'm not saying they are irreplaceable but you are under estimating their ability and the difficulty we are going to have in finding better replacements. He’s a much better footballer than Allen and can do the defensive side too. And just because he couldn’t get consistently in the Bournemouth doesn’t mean anything. He’s one of the best midfielders in this league. It is but you don’t ask you don’t get. We’ll see. No. He looks a fabulous player. I think his best games have been when he’s played centrally behind the striker. He’s looked every bit good enough there and has been more consistent than Vrancic. Vrancic from the get go was poor for 85 mins and excellent for 5. That then changed to awful for 90 minutes from about November. I’m not. As I’ve said we’ve already got better players here and getting more won’t be hard.

With Bournemouth getting back into the Prem there must be a pretty good prospect of them being prepared to listen to offers for Pearson (given he's been no more than a fringe player for them). The key thing for me isn't so much his individual qualities but how he COMPLEMENTS the qualities that Baker has. That's how successful teams work, isn't it? (Gleghorn / Wallace springs to mind).

It's a good example Imho Wallace was a complete waste of space once Gleghorn (&Macari) left but that play off season with what seemed like a cobbled midfield of Keen, left sided and surely past it Gleghorn moved into the middle with headless chicken Wallace and left back Potter but it blended superbly Razors running complemented Gleghorn craft with good delivery from both flanks Pace, trickery and goals provided by Surridge and Sheron Fantastic Just needed a couple of decent back up players to get them over the line...
