www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-transfer-gossip-free-6977227The long list of Championship free agents can be whittled down a long way quite quickly. There are a few who are probably out of reach unless you're in the Premier League or at least have parachute payments, like Reading midfielder John Swift, Blackburn's Joe Rothwell and West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone. There are those like Huddersfield left-back Harry Toffolo who are expected to have options triggered to stay at their current clubs. There are quite a lot who are not doing much at their current clubs too and there won't be a stampede for their signature. But Stoke City, under the restraints of financial fair play, will have to do their shopping in the free agent aisle and Michael O'Neill has tasked his recruitment team with getting to the front of queues. MoN said only a couple of weeks ago that we wouldn't be in for any free transfers because of the massive signing on fees.

Tommy Doyle of Man City currently on loan at cardiff there’s three we will have an interest in at city but are only allowed 2 Doyle, THB and /or Delap? Man City U23's are jam packed with quality so getting pretty much any of them is bad thing Youve got the three in my view

Think he just meant it'd be a struggle to get the better ones as they'll follow the money, presumably to the parachute clubs. He actually went on to say "we won't be spending a lot of money, if any, in the summer, we know that" And neither will most other clubs. So if we aren't going down the Bosman route, we're going to struggle

Exciting times Why should anyone bother? It’s what we do. Just don’t ask me why. I wasn't expecting much but the negativity that comes from the manager and the club, it's shit. We've lost ten thousand fans since relegation, down and down we drop. Next season Michael? What's the plan? 'we're fucked'. I'd better rush to pay several hundred pounds for a season ticket before they're all snapped up In the current climate, who can afford to pay up to watch that shit, a team that's lost nearly half it's home games in the last 5 years

This is what I'd be working to team and squad wise. Ideal team
Bursik New right back Souttar New CB New LB New DM Baker Campbell Powell New LW New ST Ideal squad
GK - Bursik Bonham Simkin RB - New right back Duhaney (FFS) LB - New left back Tymon CB - Souttar New Centre back Wilmot Forrester Taylor DM - New DM New DM/Renew Thompson but ideally not CM - Baker Clucas (try to get rid) New CM AM - Powell Vranic RW - Campbell Brown LW - New LW or Doughty DWP ST - 2 new strikers needed? And then Brown and Campbell too. I think within that lot above you need an extra CM, ideally a younger player learning and an attacker who is the same. I'm still here with this. The only changes being I wouldn't keep Vrancic now. And that Maja should definitely be one of the strikers. A squad of 24 is plenty which is what the above adds up to. The problem with this is that MON has nailed his mast to 3-5-2. So we need wing backs as opposed to full backs. Definitely someone new on the right needed. Tymon has come along well, and if he can iron out his errors ahead of the new season, we may need back up to him as opposed to a replacement for the LWB role. Allen, Baker and Sawyers have shown some promise as a midfield 3. At the start of the year I would have taken any opportunity to get rid of Allen, but he might be worth keeping on for another year. Ditto for Sawyers. Surprised you think we should keep Maja. Do you see this guy as the man who can potentially bag us between 15-20 goals next season? I don't.

It depends how well Maja goes through pre season doesn't it? When he first came he looked rusty but has generally got a bit better with each game in terms of his movement, his touch and his stamina. It's not hard to see why, he had not played many minutes in half a season due to injury and circumstances at Bordeaux. Fitness is a lot in top level sport as it gives the athlete/player more confidence that his body can do what his head is asking him to do. If the coaching team can take Brown from where we signed him to around 15 in his second season then I don't see why they can't coax that out of Maja given a fair wind?

With Maja, it depends if he's absolutely wedded to the 3-5-2.
Hard to see any of the current lot being able to lead the line on their own, although Brown could probably make the best go of it.
He did switch back to the back four for 6 games in January
I think there's much more chance of Maja working in a front 2, but then that has knock-on effects further back.
Does a Maja-Brown partnership potentially gives us everything we'd need or do you need someone more physical to play with either of them?
And then you've got Campbell, who's largely looked best on the right of a three. Where does he fit in?
There's no point us looking at wingery targets like Philogene if we're going to use the wing-backs for the bulk of the time. When we signed him, presumably MON thought we'd see out the season with the back four? Then he seemed to have another change of heart.
And if we're sticking with wing-backs, is Doughty finished here? He's shown no willingness to give him a chance there.
I think it'd be a pretty big risk to spend £3m on Maja given what we've seen so far, but he's certainly showing flashes of what he could do.
He's only got 1 more year left - and if he's on the £50,000+ he's reportedly on at Bordeaux, they may be keen to see the back of him but how low would they go? Not sure how we could agree a long-term deal with him if he's got a year left on those type of figures though.

Big question marks over Maja being here for next season I would have thought. 3.5mil is a lot for us by the seems of things and his parent club may not be interested in loaning him back to us if there's other options.

Given the January business was all about one big push for promotion, I'd be very surprised if the permanent side of the Maja deal hinged on us going up. Chances are if we did end up promoted Maja would've had a big part to play and would have looked a snip at £3.5m It hasn't worked out that way and I just can't see how we could a) sign him for £3.5m given the FFP position and b) get him to sign on what you'd imagine would be £15k a week max, in line with our post covid wage policy

Another loan for Maja perhaps Yeah, probably comes down to if anything better financially for them comes up. Can't really see anyone offering decent money for him and having to deal with his wages - and Bordeaux won't want to pay him £2m+ for sitting on the bench/in the stands - so another loan with us paying a good chunk of his wages might be the best they get. But it'd be a bit of an embarrassment to loan him out for the last year of his deal with so little return - the kind of thing we've made a habit of, and will probably have to do with Etebo and Afobe!

Yes definitely. I'm really hoping he isn't fixed with 3-5-2 We haven't been able to play 4-4-2 because we haven't got the players we can trust to do the job and we've not been able to bring anyone in to do that job. Smith, Tymon are 4-4-2 failures and Fox is never fit. He's tried to use the players we have got and applied a system to fit.

I'm sure Etebo would love the south west of France. He's good collateral for a swap surely? Not a bad shout. Everyone’s a winner. Apart from Bordeaux of course but fuck em He’s a good midfielder and I think would do well in that league. Would depend if they needed a central midfielder and a whole host of things. But swapping one out of contract in a year player for another seems to be logical to me? Same with Afobe.
