Odd isn't it. Walcott was awful for England but constantly picked due to club form. Hateley and Stone going back were often better for England than their clubs. Barnes rarely performed at International level like you say. Hateley was better for England than his club!! He scored for fun for Rangers, I don’t remember him getting many appearances let alone goals for England. Likewise Stone was v good for Forest His purple patch for England got him a move to Milan . Maybe slipped your mind. He got 30 odd caps scoring 10 goals think it was. Would really count scoring for Rangers in his latter years.

Harry Maguire 😬 players picked on current form His current form for England is excellent Understand the concerns re his club form but that's not the only factor If we had some obvious candidates to replace him then that might be a different story. Pickford also plays better for England than he does for his club John Barnes was one of the best players ever but bar the odd game wasn't good for England Brilliant chapter on Barnes and why he felt he underperformed for England in All Played Out by Pete Davies, probably my favourite football book ever.

Bursik and Harwood-Bellis in the young 'uns squad... But Bursik can't make our side, with a league 2 quality Bonham taking his spot!

Etienne Green is a great name THB hardly done great things to be fair. Shocked THB is in there. Can only imagine it’s because he is playing regularly at a relatively high standard rather than playing U23s still.

Bursik and Harwood-Bellis in the young 'uns squad... Is it just me or is that a pretty shit squad. Compared to what’s been coming through in recent years?

Aaron Ramsdale, Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold forced to withdraw owing to injury. replaced by Ollie Watkins, Kyle Walker-Peters, Sam Johnstone and Crystal Palace's Tyrick Mitchell I presume Abraham's bad back has been caused by carrying Mourinho along in Rome

Drugs are great if used correctly He was excellent for England at that stage. You are the only person I would prescribe hard, illegal drugs to. After the Brazil game he had the pick of a dozen top clubs to go to. A bit like the World Cup, a player has a good tournament or 2 or 3 games and clubs clamouring for him. Luther B got a move to Italy on the back of 1 game. It's quite simple to grasp if you were around rather than Google.

Hateley is one of those weird ones, he spent so much time on Scotland and he looked like a jock and played like a jock. I sometimes forget he isn’t actually a jock!

Not being English getting dragged into an alternate reality here. He was Sven's fave wasn't he? He was no Cascarino who was as Irish as Toad in the hole from Aunt Bessie but had a name that would have qualified him for the UK on Eurovision....and scored more points

He was voted player of that tour I think a loss to Uruguay...2-0 or 2-1, Joe in Oz will put me right and a 0-0 in Chile.

I really like the look of Ramsey from Villa. Don’t think he’ll quite make the squad but looks a real talent and is at the right club at this stage of his career.

Unless the refs are on the take like in South Korea....
