So is St Georges Park failing then?
What was the blue print?
Was that place not going to bring the next generation of young english talent weather it be Mens or Womens.
Also wasn't it going to be the new pathway to bringing through coaches that we can develop over a long period to become top managers. A production line if you will.

Pretty much nothing as far as I can see The Premier League has the power in this country not The FA

There simply isn't an English candidate strong enough for this job. There's this idea English managers are overlooked. That may or may not be the case. But there's no reason they can't go work overseas. The Graham Potter route.

Answered from my perspective earlier: It's not an overnight thing. The money the Coates put into the Stoke Academy over 15 years ago has only started to bear fruit in recent years. I imagine coaching is an even slower process. And Southgate has been a success. We didn't win a major tournament but England were there or thereabouts possibly the most consistently we've been in history? St. George's Park has had less time than the big upgrades to our our Academy/Clayton Wood.

I’m not really an England supporter but just heard the press conference. I think he will do well. The 18 month contract is a good idea. TT kept referring to “John & Mark”. With the many press conferences I’ve heard in recent years I was half expected him to say John & Jon. 🙂 On the point of it being an English manager, I heard earlier that the last English bosses to win European competition were Bob Paisley and Brian Clough… Bobby Robson with Barcelona 1997 Cup Winners Cup

I think its terrible that we have to go down the foreign route again.
Eriksson and Capello era's should have put that too bed.
I understand we dont have great English candidates but its just needs to be an English manager. AND not because of xenophobic reasons.
Tuchel is a tough man-manager and he will have the players scared to play football again (just like the Capello era).
He might be a better tactician, but its absolutely 100% doomed to failure.

I don't think he'll have the players scared to play. Players who've played for him said it was ace playing for him. They knew their role and always had scope to express themselves. Him being argumentative is more with administrators.

Do people in Cricket circles and Rugby Union circles have the same reservations about foreign coaches?
The media certainly don’t seem to have as strong an opinion regarding other sports.

Him being argumentative is more with administrators. Its not even about Tuchel himself. We had some great players and teams under Eriksson and Capello but some seriously ordinary performances. I really think Southgate was under-valued because he did actually get the team playing without fear (we even won a few penalty shoot-outs in his time). I just think our international players are very weak mentally compared to other countries (Brazil, Germany, Spain). They only perform with a big arm on their shoulders. I think the manager needs to understand the history of England and the mental fragility. Thats really was great about Southgate - he was there as a player in 96 and missing a penalty and he knew what was needed. We can have a master tactician in charge in the mold of Napoleon, but the players wont perform if they are scared about failure.

Its funny he has only an 18 month contract up to the World Cup.
What if we reach the final and LOSE again?? Does that mean we get rid again and onto the next manager?
Surely anything less than winning the thing will mean hes no better than Southgate. Would have applied to any manager to be fair. But anything less cant be considered success

Southgate had plenty of chances and wasn't able to convert with his cautious approach. I don't see nostalgia for him surfacing any time soon.

Ironically that QF v France was imo the least cautious of all the really big game sunder Southgate we took the game to them but didn't take our chances & lack of experience showed at times in that game

With so much emphasis being put on coaches, surely the coach should have to be English as well as the players, likewise for all other nations. It should be about showcasing a nations best coaches as well as best players.

But anything less cant be considered success I've pointed out elsewhere on this thread, the chances of us winning the next world cup are close to zero. The circumstances surrounding it mean we'd require a remarkable chain of extreme good fortune to challenge. Of all the things Tuchy could achieve winning the 2026 world cup is hardly on my radar.

St. George's Park has been one of the key catalysts for our relative achievements since the debacle against Iceland in 2016. Having that central base for home games, with world class facilities has been critical.
Sure, we haven't won anything - but we've come as close as it is possible to get.
Do people have short memories? Can they remember how consistently shit we were before 2017?
We've always been a nation ranking between 6-16 in the world. We're now very much in the mix of those top countries.

…. but will Tuchel sing the national anthem?, I’m worried sick. If he can consign that shite England 'band' and their God awful renditions of the Dambusters and the Great Escape to history's dustbin he can sing the greatest hits of Lady Gaga for all I care 😆

While I don't much care where Tuchel is from in this case, I do think it's weird that the players have to come from the nation but not the coaches. I agree, that if it is about national achievement then surely it should apply across the board. It's just a bit daft otherwise, might as well let the nations buy players from other countries if they want to play. It's not necessarily about being nationalistic its just being consistent. If 'we' win the World Cup then surely Germany have won at least a bit of it?

That’s the funniest thing I’ve read in ages. 1-0 up after 2 minutes at home in the first final since 1966, and our next shot on target was in extra time. Came out of our shell for 10 minutes against Spain before retreating again. English coaches are not very good- and our players are nowhere near as good as they like to believe. Seriously, how many of our side would you pick in a European Best XI, or World XI? Your salient point might be how strong they are mentally, because when they need leadership, I haven’t seen too many players coming forward to drive us on- perhaps Bellingham?

To be fair, if we go to the WC and lose in the final, that would be the best performance for the national team in living memory, almost. Quite a high bar to be dissatisfied with, I must say.
