Yes, that run of games without him over Christmas we were giving Sonic the Hedgehog a run for his money. I thought I'd literally drown in all the goals at one point. Comment of the year so far. I'm not sure where the comments that Powell was poor on Saturday are coming from either. I thought he was good. Not anywhere near as good as Powell can be, so maybe that's where the comments are coming from. Think you have just answered your own question there mate. Powell was poor compared to how well he can play, but he's only just come back from a lengthy lay off so that can't be underestimated, but the high standards he has set and the fact that he has been our talisman for so long makes him stand out when he's not on it.

I asked the same question yesterday which he’s studiously ignored despite being logged in several times since. It seems like he’s trying to foster an enigmatic ‘Dave’s Views, I know inside info’ kind of persona so I’m calling BS. He does work for the club and I think gets told off for oversharing some times Which if true is fair enough. Although a straightforward reply might have addressed the issue in the first place. It’s the cloak and dagger, Enigma Code bollocks a la Daves Views that made me disbelieve it.

Remember the opponents were better than an average team. He still scored (assisted) the equaliser. Because he tries more adventurous passing it can look more ridiculous when it goes wrong as well. Given our propensity to get basic 5 yard passes wrong I'll let him off. Hopefully he'll be showing us some Nathan Jones based shithouse celebrations next week

Powell didn’t have a great game on Saturday, it happens, even to him. He is by a mile our best player and every game when he’s fit should be built around him, the thought of selling him would be outrageous!!!!! Still managed an assist with the first goal. The assist was a combination of Shithousery and skill,a pleasure to behold.

Bizarre.

A half fit Nick Powell is way better than any fully fit alternative at the club. Really? Technically he's a good Championship level player but he's got flaws in his game and depending on the shape we play I don't think he's necessarily the best option. Having said that he is the best option as the attacking midfielder in the current formation - providing he gets fully fit, keeps switched on, doesn't roll round like a mardarse after the slightest contact and doesn't keep trying to play Hollywood passes all the time. Disclaimer: I get Powell is a good player but I just can't warm to him. I'd take Vrancic over him every day - as good technically, better with a dead ball, not as much of a goal threat and just cracks on with the game when fouled (and as a result doesn't get fouled as often). And Baker is better than both of them.

Powell isn't fouled because he stays down - yes his antics play a part but he's predominantly targeted because he's our best threat. Baker is a completely different type of player in a different position.

Powell gives the ball away too much for my liking on the whole but you have to have an agenda if you're suggesting we're a better team without him, we clearly aren't.
His "antics" are top notch, bloody love it actually.

Bet you warmed to a player who headbutted a team mate on the pitch.

He’s a bit like Bruno Fernandes in that he gives the ball away a lot - but only because he’s a risk taker. Everyone needs a risk taker because at some point one of those audacious passes creates a goal. He’s also very important for the press, something Vrancic cannot do.

Powell is more of a goal threat and Vrancic's pass accuracy is more consistent and has resulted in more assists. In terms of who is more effective it depends on the formation. In the currently favoured 21 in midfield I'd pick Powell over Vrancic but in a 12 or in front of a back five in terms of effectiveness this season I'd pick Vrancic over Powell and wouldn't be averse to picking them both. I agree Baker is a different player to both Vrancic and Powell but I think he's the only midfielder we have who could hold his own in the Premiership - he's a step up in quality on both of them. Any manager or defender who understands the dark arts (ie all of them) will target Powell because he's effective AND he's a soft touch. If he wasn't such a mardarse they wouldn't bother - there would be no point. I can appreciate Powell's qualities and want him in the team but that doesn't mean I have to think he's God's gift or even have to like him.

Powell is on a different level to most of the players around him. It’s not surprising he misplaces passes because if his teammates were on a similar level they’d be in the right position instead of ten yards away.

I cant believe I am reading people criticising Nick Powell
He is the man. Makes us tick, in a Cantona type way
Yes he loses his rag easily, yes he gives the ball away trying clever passes, yes he absolutely winds opposition players up - but without him we are one dimensional and stale, almost boring and static - a bit like Ric he can have a stinker then produce some magic out of nothing.
Tie him down as long as we can.

Is that the reason why Vrancic has more assists? Or is it because he's on set pieces? You don't have to think he's god's gift but you're dramatically underplaying his impact and influence, presumably because you don't like him? He is the team's talisman in a way Vrancic, as much as I like him, isn't. Even in systems that haven't quite worked as well for him he's still made a contribution, from being shoehorned out wide to playing as a second striker. Powell was still just about our most effective player when we were playing with a back three, with 5 in his first 12 before his broken leg.

Incredible thread which seems to be based on some people's prejudice rather than their ability to know a good footballer when they see one.
If you want someone who just plays percentages go and watch Dean Whitehead.

Powell was still just about our most effective player when we were playing with a back three, with 5 in his first 12 before his broken leg. Mardarses get targeted because there is a payoff - the opposition get away with more fouls than they would have because the ref knows they go down easy whereas a creative player without a reputation for diving will get more than their fair share of fouls. Vrancic is on set pieces because his dead ball delivery is better than Powell's and an assist is an assist. Both Powell and Vrancic can play a killer ball in open play but Vrancic picks his moment and will play the simple pass when necessary and Powell tries to overdo it. Last Saturday was a perfect example - Powell's passing in the first half was way off and he was our least effective player on the pitch. As to goal scoring I agree - Powell offers more. I am not dramatically underplaying Powell's contribution I'm seeing him for what he is - a very good player with flaws in his game and (for me) an unlikeable attitude. And I've said I'd pick him - if the fact I don't like him particularly was overruling my judgement of his as a player why would I do that? The thing I'm being got at for is because I refuse to see him as some sort of demigod. My assessment of Powell is way more objective and realistic than 90% os the posts on here because it's not tainted by rose coloured spectacles. As to being our talisman - maybe to the Powell fanboys on here but not to everyone and I suspect his team mates and manager don't think it either. I'd put money on him not being the most popular player in the dressing room and as to putting him on a pedestal and hailing him as a talisman - seriously? Not going to happen.

Of Shithousery, he is undoubtedly a master. However, there comes a point when the club need to make a hard decision about whether he is effective every week in this division. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Powell fan. But even his most ardent admirer would, I hope agree that he was shit on Satdee. Is it time to sell in the summer? Shit bin surely? Selling him is not an option we should consider. I agree. Selling him (unless we had a replacement lined up who was better and just as cheap) would be to take a step backwards. He may not have had his best game on Saturday, but he still provided the headed assist for Maja's goal - hardly surprising as he remains the best header of the ball of all our attacking first teamers.

I *love* my rose tinted spectacles. They're what I view all things Stoke through, and Powell looks even better, even more demigod-like through them than in real life.
Down with rationalism and objectivity! This is football, not an annual appraisal in the county council planning department.

It isn’t objective at all, it’s clearly coloured by the fact you don’t like him! Powell does get his fair share of fouls and players who don’t engage in his kind of gamesmanship are targeted just as much as he is by opponents. He was the third most fouled player in the Championship last season. Why, out of interest, do you think he has ‘fanboys’? If you look at the number of our goals he’s contributed to since he came into the team under MON that might offer a bit of an indication.
