What’s the difference between the cup and the league? Why make the distinctions for the cup? I guess the logic is that in the cup you’ve been eliminated from the competition as a player and you shouldn’t be allowed to re-enter it with another team. To give an extreme example, imagine if Stoke beat Leeds in the cup, then Newcastle buy Leeds’ three best players and we have to play Newcastle in the next round. Is it fair we have to face them again? Or alternatively players haven’t been eliminated and are on a good run with a smallish team, but another team with a lot of resources fancies winning the cup, so buy up the talent from their potential knockout rivals. [admittedly the transfer window system negates a lot of this] It’s different for the league just because it works differently - you never get “eliminated” from the league. That scenario was OK when there weren't transfer windows, if a club buys a player in a January window then it's their asset, it's a restriction of his and the clubs rights to play as he has a contract with them. I can understand loan players being cup tied as its not a full transfer.

Bursik Duhaney Wilmott Moore Fox Powell Thompson Vrancic DWP Maja Campbell
Opportunity to rest some and get others back up to speed.
Looking at that line up I can't recall us ever having such a competitive squad - better match day squads certainly never that strength in depth.

Whereas Duhaney is yet to show that he's "strength" If 8 of those players are either matchday regulars or key players how on earth can you claim they are not "in depth"? The fact that we have brought in 8 regular/key players to replace the last starting 11 is pretty much the definition of "in depth". Only three of those players started our last league game and other than perhaps Duhaney there's a case to be made for every other player to be in the starting line up for the next league game. That's 18 players competing for a first team place without even including Fletcher, Sawyers, Souttar, Brown and Clucas - all of whom have been first team regulars at some point. You are confusing having a competitive squad with having a high quality squad. We may not have the best players in the Championship (we can't afford them and they won't come here anyway) but what we do have is a squad where pretty much every player could stake a claim for a place in the starting 11. That's a good place to be.

What purpose does it serve? I also see no real point for the 3 team season rule either, especially not for young players or players who have been out because of injury. The obvious one. Obviously with the window it doesn't happen as much , teams getting to say a semi and loaning players etc but was an incident in the CL where a high profile player was released and not able to play for his new club in the semi which would have been unfair as his ex club eliminated. May have been Ronaldo mk 1 A compromise on the question of players being cup tied, would be to say that if a player had played for one club in the cup and that club had been eliminated whilst he was still at that club, then the player could not feature in the cup for a second club. But if his original club was still in the competition when he left he could play for another club in the cup after being transferred.

Some are still trying to grasp the concept of the turnstile. That's a bit like one of those you got for homework...A train leaves Penn St station at 12-30 AM travelling at 40 mph.and another one leaves.....that's usually as far as I get before feeling the urge to watch The Magic Roundabout

Wilmott - first team fixture but covering for Smith at right back. I'll give you that one but only in terms of being right back Jagielka - put straight into the first team on arrival and has done well enough to retain the first team spot. THB - played every game since he arrived and worthy of retaining his place Tymon - first team regular Thompson - played well before getting injured and many people's first choice in the deeper midfield role Baker - made captain and done enough already to be a first team regular Vrancic - first team regular and has been excellent all season Campbell - not at his best but if he get back to form would be a first team regular Fletcher - first team regular and to date first choice as the target man upfront JPB - classy player with the pedigree to claim a first team place Please explain how the majority of that squad are simply there for rotation? Pretty much all of them could make a claim for a first team spot on merit .

Our options for defence rotation were limited pre-window, but Wilmot, out of favour as we're already playing two rightsided central defnders, was shafted to replace Smith. Thompson is coming back from injury, Baker is definitely for the future, and Vrancic is a player I like, but he hasn't been excellent all season. He's struggled for fitness and playing in central midfield is not where he's best, because his defensive qualities are limited. He's not a regular, he's a stand in for Powell, playing further upfield of course.. From our regular midfield we were missing O'Neill favourites Allen, Clucas, and Powell. Campbell and Fletcher had not appeared as starters in January until this game, they're both best when fielded together with Powell. They're both currently second choice to DWP and Brown, our topscorer. JPB is indeed talented, but he hasn't yet fully established himself.

I think goalkeeper is an area where we could do better, Wilmot was rotated in to replace Smith. That's the one rotation I agree on even though you don't think its a rotation. And the idea that a manager is prepared to risk a loss just to "hang a player out to dry" is utter bullshit. Thompson is coming back from injury - but that is completely irrelevant to your claim that the Huddersfield team was purely a rotation Baker is for the future - ie the fact he played was nothing to do with rotation Vrancic is a regular - he's played more games than Powell this season and both have played in the same team (on merit) on a number of occasions. A good number of posters thought Vrancic was brought in as backup for Powell and that simply hasn't been how its worked out, Vrancic is deserving of a place in the starting 11 - unfortunately he's now out injured. Clucas and Allen were dropped from the Huddersfield game and I didn't even name either of them in my side for Saturday and Powell (who I did name) needs game time to get back up to speed. And I've not even mentioned Sawyers who looks like he might be back earlier than anyone thought. The competition for places in the midfield is ridiculous - in a good way. It's the same upfront. Campbell (who would be a first team regular if fully back up to speed) and Fletcher (a first team regular bar injury since he arrived) have indeed stepped down and are in competition with DWP, JPB and Brown (our top scorer). And we've just added Maja to the mix and maybe we might even see something of Sima before the season is out. Your claim that we haven't got strength in depth simply doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Vrancic has lately played more than Powell, because Powell has been out for many weeks, but before that most of his appearences were as sub, frequently coming on for Powell in the last 10-15 mins. Playing them together is a risk we can't afford for two such non-defensive midfielders, at least if we also play three men up front. I can't be bothered going through all your rubbish. Oh but one other thing. If our team and players are as excellent as you consistently proclaim, then why are we a midtable team with mostly dire games over the course of the season...

Don't agree. Think it serves its purpose and we already have a 3 team season rule What’s the difference between the cup and the league? Why make the distinctions for the cup? I think it came from the days of multiple cup replays. Players were being transferred in the middle of a tie and so competed in the replay for the team who had been opponents in the original game.

I don’t want to be in an argument, but didn’t we start the season using Vrancic and Powell in a three and then move it to using Vrancic and Powell together by having them play either side of the central striker for a few games as inside forwards? I know that we did that a few times, I can’t remember how regularly it was though. Many of the games we have played since losing Powell have been such a slog, it’s made the season feel twice as long as it is!
