aljazeera remain the most balanced "mainstream" news outlet for news on the conflict......... It is also a lesson that in a brutal war conflict no one side retains the high moral ground much as we would like it to be so

Anyone else noticed the shift in tone from the media? The outlook has suddenly become rather bleak instead of bullish about Ukraine's chances of defeating Russia....... It's just the fact nothing much is happening of major strategic value. The fighting around Kerson (South) and Sverodonetsk ( East) will develop into a stalemate. Even if RUS take Sverodonetsk the immediate West of the city is high ground and a river ( Perfect defensive ground for UKR). I can see there being an operation pause from both sides for a few weeks/ month to consolidate and manoeuvre.

Meaning there is a low moral ground which Russia dominates.

They could potentially drive the grain to the port in Moldova and export from there. I think it’s about a 3 hour drive from Odessa. I’ve got no idea if that port or the logistics could cope with the scale required though. Moldova is land locked. It has a small port on the Danude capable of taking ships but much smaller capacity. Odessa can take ships with 13m draft about the same as Teesport. Moldova's port has only 4m draft for bulk carriers and only used for small bulk vessels. Ship capacity increases exponentially with draft. The UK's biggest bulk terminal is Immingham which can take 14m draft vessels. www.abports.co.uk/locations/immingham/Further to my last post above, Ukrainian grain has been shipped to Spain via a deep port in Poland. www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/ship-with-18-000-tons-of-ukrainian-corn-arrives-in-spain-via-new-route/2612847Swinoujscie port has over 13m draft.

Where are the BLM style protests demanding we cut Putin’s gas?! Yeah it's all the EUs fault. But it's funny how people seem to point fingers and welcome a little more hardship, yet poop their pants about the cost of petrol, cost of food or cost of living crisis. But yeah, lets add some more poverty into the mix as more expensive petrol isn't an issue (apparently), and we can also tow the anti-EU line and blame them because they're just a bit worse than us based on an already existing reliance on Russian gas they had before this all started. The reason there aren't any BLM type protests is because people care more about their own comfort than the war. Protesting is shit if you've got something to lose and nothing to gain.

EDIT: this gets updated sometimes. "EU28" imports are falling.

Russian-occupied Donetsk got hit by rockets again today. It's almost certainly a Russian false flag, either to scare the people living there into thinking they have to fight Ukraine, or to try and blame the Ukrainians so people are scared of giving them uesful rockets.
Imagine how evil you'd have to be to slaughter civilians in an area you claim to be protecting.

I still don't see how Ukraine will do anything other than lose the east of their country if they can't reach the Russian artillery and Putin is willing to destroy every town block by block as he clearly is.
New Berlin Wall coming down the East of Ukraine? If Putin is willing to stop there which is a big if!

They showed videos yesterday of six Russian rocket trucks blown up and said it was Western artillery that got them. It seems like it's a bunch of races to me. How quickly can we get kit to Ukraine, versus how quickly they lose towns and soldiers, versus how quickly they destroy Russia's army. I honestly can't tell which way it'll go but there are some positives so it's not all doom & gloom IMO. If we start seeing lots of videos of wrecked Western guns or mass Ukrainian surrenders then I'd be getting seriously worried.

At the risk of upsetting Prestwich, another interesting (and worrying) article from the Spectator (although, sadly, not from one his preferred commentators): Is Lithuania next on Putin’s hitlist?. This is the crux of the article… Mainstream media has yet to pick this up, but it’s starting to get some attention on the continent for example from the EU Observer, Russia's law to uncreate Lithuania: laugh or cry?. Must say, I’m struggling to raise a laugh at Russia’s antics just now.

Must say, I’m struggling to raise a laugh at Russia’s antics just now. I think it would be foolhardy to discount any potential action Russia might take but you must put in context the background of the proposer of this legislation Evgeniy Federov is obsessed, as he sees it, with the restoration of Russia’s "Sovereignty" a bit like Rees-Mogg and the ERG (and perhaps some on this MB) He is a revanchist who hankers for the restoration of the USSR Borders as they were in 1991 and which he claims Gorbachev gave away illegally He is anti Oligarchs who he believes have further undermined Russia's Sovereignty by offshoring their wealth and seat of Governance He delights in Sanctions as he believes this will force repatriation to Mother Russia He positively foams at the mouth of Russia being removed from SWIFT which he believes will force Russia State Bank into an isolationist policy, are you getting the ERG vibes. One of his more dangerous policies(for him) is that he wants to see the office of President abolished and a return to the Politburo Style Who knows, he might get traction, Russia has a long history of toppling one nut case and replacing them with an even worse one

Been reading everywhere that the Russians have blown up all the river crossings out of severodonetsk across the siversky donetsk. This doesn't sound like the smartest idea to me if the plan is to move on to Lysychansk next.
They will have to pontoon across, which we've seen they aren't very good at, and the Ukrainians will be able to pick them off from advantageous points in Lysychansk.

Your anti EU rhetoric unfortunately blinds you to make rational analysis of articles you are linking For ease of reference ill call them 1A 1B and 2 2 The Article was written even before Russia invaded Ukraine and purports to represent Draghis position at that time. This is a far cry from his position now which is completely in line with EU's position and indeed UKs 1A 1B These are exactly the same article picked up from the AP Newswire The essence of the article is "be careful what you wish for" or as they describe it "Unintended Consequences " An Oil refinery in Sicily has Russian Owners. Pre Sanctions 15% of its Oil came from Russia Due to Sanctions its former suppliers will not now supply meaning 100% is now coming from Russia. Germany has a similar but much smaller problems with one Russian owned refinery North East of Berlin Germany is in the process of changing the law to take over this refinery, I suspect Italy will have to do something similar. EU tends to do things methodically and without breaking International Laws The important issue is that EU is well on target to reduce import of Russian Oil by 90% by end of 2022 Currently it has cut imports from 1.75M b/d pre invasion to 1.3M b/d This Target and the strategy to get there is obviously exactly the same as UK The UK will phase out imports of Russian oil in response to Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine by the end of the year, the Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has confirmed today (Tuesday 8 March). The phasing out of imports will not be immediate, but instead allows the UK more than enough time to adjust supply chains, supporting industry and consumers. The government will work with companies through a new Taskforce on Oil to support them to make use of this period in finding alternative supplies. The UK is working closely with the US, the EU and other partners to end our dependence on Russian hydrocarbons in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine, recognising the different circumstances and transition timelines.www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-to-phase-out-russian-oil-importsThe EU strategy is to Embargo all Russian oil shipments at its ports Another "Unintended Consequence" of EU purchasing less Russian Oil is that Countries particularly India and to a lesser extent China, Turkey and South Korea are buying up the surplus at discounted prices. As we discussed before when Ursula went to India her primary mission was to try and dissuade India from doing this, not very successfully obviously Boris's primary objective was to get a Trade Deal. Do you think this focus should continue ? It was seen during the Iran Sanctions that withdrawing Insurance Cover to Tankers was the most effective weapon on sanction Busting It is therefore encouraging to hear that UK is likely to follow EUs lead in refusing to give insurance coverage to Russian Ships insuranceday.maritimeintelligence.informa.com/ID1140843/UK-expected-to-follow-EU-sanctions-on-insuring-Russian-ships

Great looking video of this one is online now. The Russians also put an air-defence truck on it worth $15-25 million depending on which model. Satellite photos make it look like Russia has put more kit on Snake Island. If all the vehicles are modern AA systems then you're talking $300+ million worth, go get 'em Ukraine!

Let's hope they try to go pontooning again! Sadly the Russians could still cut off the roads to Lysychansk and they're over the river to the south so they could still make it, but it'd be just wonderful if the political pressure forces the Russians to throw away another 80 vehicles on a failed bridging attempt... It's now 18 days after the Russians said they'd captured Sievierodonetsk and they still don't have it.
