I think he's a 5/10 minute a game type player on the whole but those 5/10 minutes are often class. I wouldn't have him in our best XI. Ha ha ha. You wouldn't have a player with the highest chance creation rate per 90mins in the division in your starting lineup, christ we must be fucking good. No, I’d play Powell instead. Who is better.

They are different but ultimately unless you play one out of position you can only play one. If we signed a really good defensive midfield player I’d be willing to do that in a 4231 tbh.

I think he has been an inspired and surprising signing. Credit to the manager who clearly loves both him and Powell who are my type of players full of skill and creativity and I love watching them. When the manager arrived I didn't think he would embrace these type of players preferring workhorses. Another year? Yes please.

I think Powell has shown he makes our best 11 in a number of roles. I've been banging on for years about us not scoring anywhere near enough goals and think accommodating the two of them from what we have is the only way to address that issue.

So you'd let our most creative player this season run down his contract and hope we sign some lump of a midfielder instead? After his performances this season the only reason Vrancic would want to wait is because every club in the Championship will be after him in the summer. Sign him up asap. Depending on the terms of his contract, it may not be something that crops up until the end of the year anyway. I like him a lot, but he's not getting any younger and his game time has to be managed. I'd rather a new DM, with Powell and one of Vrancic and Sawyers (or Allen, or another new midfielder if we can get rid of Clucas). He'll be a good option but if we somehow manage to get to the Prem, it's doubtful we'd sign him for another year. Why does his game time need managing? He's clearly looked after himself, isn't carrying any weight, not carrying any long term injuries, hasn't been picking up any niggling injuries on a regular basis and looks perfectly capable of lasting 90 minutes. There was an assumption when was brought in that he was cover for Powell but the fact is his performances warrant a starting place on merit - there is no good reason for managing his game time any more than any other player. It's questionable whether any of our players could hack it in the Premiership but Vrancic is only one of about half a dozen who have the that little bit of quality that would at least make them decent squad players. His dead ball delivery alone is worth having around and that isn't going to vanish on his next birthday. The "we need a DM" has become a mantra on here. We need a DM if and only if we revert to a back 4. If we stick to a back 5 we don't need a DM. I'd agree we need a midfielder with more of a physical presence but that isn't necessarily a DM. Saying we need to replace any of our midfielders with a DM is a discussion in its own right - picking on Vrancic is just a way of ducking that arguement. And finally I don't get why Vrancic should be the one to make way for a DM/physically midfielder when Sawyers is likely to go back to West Brom and both Allen and Thompson are out of contract in the summer - all of whom have been playing in positions where that sort of player would slot in. You are getting rid of one of the few players we have who can create and take chances for one who at best is there to make up for deficiencies in the defence. Sorry but I genuinely don't get why you don't think Vrancic is worth keeping. You either don't rate him (fair enough but really?) or you've decided we need a DM and getting rid of Vrancic is a way of shoe horning one in - which is an odd choice given the other options.

Even if we got promoted he’s worth having on the bench. A hurdle to cross were it to arise if ever there was one :-)

The guy is absolute class. Vision, passing, crossing, shooting, headlocks - he's got the lot. Can you imagine how we'd be going on over the past month if we didn't have him, and Powell was injured? Our midfield would be null and void of all creativity. You need players like Powell and Vrancic in the squad. No brainer to keep him on. 😁 Headlocks!!! 😄

I like him mate, stop picking an argument. For DM read central midfielder with more physical clout than any of the others we've got, such as Rothwell at Blackburn Rovers. At the moment, and that includes Sunday, we're not competing as well for that second ball. Vrancic and even Sawyers are excellent with the ball but not blessed with the pace or power to win it back too often. Powell back would be great as he adds bite. Clucas is a little anonymous as a player and Thompson has his limits, so yes, I'd love to bring in another body to challenge for a place and would happily see Sawyers go back if that was the only way. So, to repeat, Mario has been excellent so far, but let's see how it all pans out over the season. There may well be an option for club and player to renew but we don't know. He may well want to go back to Bosnia, who knows!

Sorry - I'm not having a pop at you I'm just unpicking your argument about not giving Vrancic a contract extension - which to fair may be an option in his current contract. I'm not having a go at you as such. I get the argument about having a more physical midfielder but I don't get the argument for Vrancic being the one to move on given he adds so much creativity to the team. Surely Sawyers (on loan), Allen (out of contract), Thompson (out of contract), Clucas and Ince are ahead of Vrancic in terms of bringing in a more physical player? Given the number of players out of contract this summer the club must be putting some thought into tying up some contracts now rather than have a mass exodus in the summer. Even if we get promoted and have better options in the summer we can't afford to just gut the side over one summer. A physical player may be needed but not at the expense of creativity.

It’s hard to fathom anyone being anything other than delighted to see Mario Vrancic in a Stoke shirt!

I think there is a line of thought that no-one is prepared to disclose. I suspect a lot of people saw Vrancic as cover for Powell, don't think we can carry both Powell and Vrancic in the same team and don't like the idea of Vrancic actually being a potential threat to Powell in the starting 11. It's easier to argue Vrancic out of the team on other grounds or down play his performances than face up to the fact that he might be a threat to a favourite player. Vrancic has been superb for us but I think he's viewed as being up against a fan's favourite which is taking the edge off the appreciation his performances deserve. Personally I don't there is anything wrong with genuine competition for places and if anything it should result in Powell upping his game. Powell has played very well this season but for me a straight call between Vrancic and Powell in the starting 11 is a really hard call as they both have been really good and bring something slightly different to the table. However I also think we can accommodate Vrancic and Powell in the same team especially if we go for a single striker 343.

Powell OR Mario?
No, if they're both fit and firing, l'd play them both.
Firstly neither are likely to start 40+ games a season, secondly Powell is a different type of footballer, more physical for starters. Thirdly, Powell can play further up the pitch as second striker if required.
