What, all 5 of them? Ah, reading the article, it was based on 145 people. So, literally nothing can be made of this given that next to no information on their socioeconomic status, age, comorbidities etc will be accounted for. It’s a shame that these things get picked up by the media. The reality of this study likely lies in the fact that someone is generating pilot data for a grant. They’ve tested a hypothesis on a small group of samples they can afford to look at and they’ll go use that data for the grant application (probably something like “factors affecting morbidity during the plague”). Such things are likely interesting to the research community who are interested in the plague but then they get completely blown up by the media. The research concluded that higher death rates amongst people of colour and those of black African descent was a result of the "devastating effects" of "premodern structural racism" in the medieval world.

Do you not think that there would have been racism in medieval time? It’s a potentially interesting finding that reveals something about England hundreds of years ago that isn’t relevant today (the plague is very treatable). From what I can see (it hasn’t been published yet and it’s not on BioArxiv), the research considers a number of factors that affect disease risk. “Race” will be one of those. Until the actual paper is out, it’s hard to say much more, other than an analysis of 150 samples means little and the work is only in the media because the media wants click bait culture wars.

The value in pointing it out now I think is very fucking close to zero. At best.

The value in pointing it out now I think is very fucking close to zero. At best. In the media, I agree. In research, her field is all about considering how heterogenous the population structure was in the UK at various times in our history, not just in terms of ethnicity but also economically etc. For example: “This tested the hypothesis that cultural and environmental changes in Dorset would result in changes to demography, stature, dental health, and infectious disease. The study observed change to all health variables, supporting environmental and archaeological evidence for the introduction of urban centres, changes in living conditions, greater population movement, and development of the agricultural economy. Importantly, the study demonstrated that these responses did not reflect changes observed in other areas of Britain or Gaul” www.jstor.org/stable/27793195For an archaeologist, I suppose that these findings are quite exciting. Less so for me. My point anyways was that the media here will create a toxic little mess around a finding that isn’t even going to be published in a high impact journal.

Wonder if you get a ‘special’ child with every 20 stamps you get from a Waitrose monthly shop because these celebrity types defo seem to being overly represented proportionately?

I hadn’t watched Dr Who since Matt Smith, probably won’t continue watching other than the final couple of David Tennant episodes. There’s just so many options for tv now.

I don’t get what his issue is really. He lives in a predominantly white society, and also what is his problem with white people?

I don’t get what his issue is really. He lives in a predominantly white society, and also what is his problem with white people? Hes fallen for the "all white people are inherently racist" narrative. You can blame the media reaction to Mr Floyd for all this. What a mess. I don't know whether it makes him a racist, probably more a case of him being misguided and lacking the ability to think for himself. In short he's obviously a bit thick.
