Wagner is a decent aggressive bowler but we always make him look 10 mph quicker than he is.......

I feel embarrassed watching this.
so applying T20 batting tactics to Test Cricket.
How many times in a Test Series is it going to work do you reckon? Enough to win a Test Series? Is that the thinking?

New Zealand getting rewards for bowling full and straight.
It makes you wonder why we decided to go short when New Zealand’s #9 came to the wicket.
This has been an abysmal day for Stokes as a captain.

This has been an abysmal day for Stokes as a captain. do you think he realises that though? I think he does. But what is worrying is he thinks this is the price you pay for playing his brand of cricket. Which is Hit and Hope. Which he thinks is why he won the first two tests. He is mistaken!

A bit embarrassing for Crawley (and the selectors) where Sky are showing how a number 8 (on debut) has a better batting technique than him.
A note for Sky that their coverage and analysis is excellent.

This partnership demonstrates that beyond Southee and Boult NZ are struggling in the bowling department which makes Stokes' shot now seem even more idiotic.

It's an interesting approach to Test cricket this, if this is how we're going to do it from now on, I'm not sure quite what to make of it.
Going for it obviously carries big risk, but if it comes off you can dig yourself out of a difficult situation as we did in the second Test, ultimately winning it, and have gone some way to rescuing our first innings in this one.
I think, on balance, I quite like it. I'd much rather a side failed by being aggressive and trying to wrest back some control, than passively being rolled over.

The worry is Stokes sees what happening as justification for his approach particularly for how he has decided to bat.
It isn’t.
This pair has got us out of jail.
Good to play aggressively and being true to your nature but use your fucking brain. Give yourself a chance to get in before you start trying to leather the ball.

Good 100 by Bairstow. He should lose his match fee for his celebration. No need to go running 70yds to kiss the crowd.. it's not football! Stay on the (immediate) square. 😁

Is that the thinking? Do you still feel embarrassed? It looked very bad at the time but they found a way back somehow. This has been an absolutely cracking series, after what we’ve witnessed over the last few years it’s nice to be entertained again. The belief in these players is incredible. It won’t work every game of course, we can expect a few horror shows, but it seems they want to define a new way to play test cricket. It’s going to be fun to watch for sure.

Stokes got lucky big time today. And not for the first time as skipper. Maybe that’s his greatest asset? Overton was “out” LBW at the start of the innings only the umpire missed it and NZ failed to ask for a review. If he’d have gone then we’d have struggled to reach three figures and been in a massive hole. As it is, it’s taken a record 7th wicket partnership to put us in a position where we might reach parity. We basically needed a miracle to stay in the game which is what we got. An extraordinary partnership. Miracles though don’t happen every day. Obviously. Even for Stokes. We need to play situations better, particularly Stokes who is too good a batsman to play “hit and hope”. That said, we can still play aggressively unlike the passive pish served up under the last three captains. But we need to play smart aggressive.

It’s a steep learning curve for Stokes, it’ll take a while and someone probably needs to rein him in although I’m not sure McCullum is the man to do that! Anyhow, it’s far more enjoyable than we’ve seen in the previous few years and I, for one like being entertained! Astonishing innings once again from Bairstow

If he’d have gone then we’d have struggled to reach three figures and been in a massive hole. The same could be said for Mitchell though yesterday, the umpire missed it, we didn’t review, and he went on to score a century - it could’ve been very different for them had he fallen for ~10 as they were in trouble at the time. I’m just happy to see us playing some aggressive cricket and going for it rather than playing for the draw, we’ve been far too conservative for years. You can take it too far and we will at times, but we needed a change and it’s been very positive so far against an excellent side.

Boult is a class act mind but I look at their side and feel they’re in the midst of a transition (a red ball re set)😉

I think you also have to play to your strengths, we don’t have the likes of Strauss, Cook, Trott etc who can bat all day and grind a team down. I have no desire to watch Dom Sibley again.

New Zealand for my money got 80-100 too many considering the botched reviews/dropped catches so there's definitely a lot of luck going around these 2 sides.

If I am struggling to work out what the hell has gone on today, I wonder how Sir Geoffrey will be feeling. 329 off 117 overs, followed by 264 off 49. I think he might shake his head, mutter something indistinct and head off to his rhubarb patch. One thing is for certain, I haven't got a clue what is going to happen tomorrow, except it is unlikely to be dull.

Probably even more so the late great Bob Willis! I used to enjoy Bobs rants on YouTube but they were inexplicably removed, not sure why🤷🏻♂️
