That term was consigned to the bin back in 2018 ( link). Iâm also quite concerned that Short Leg may be thought to be prejudiced against dwarfs, so that might also be in the firing line. Not to mention silly short leg being a further slight. All jokes aside I do believe even for those of us of a certain age there's a difference between ripping up the language we've always used and trying to be inclusive when talking to people of a certain sex, race or whatever it may be. I'm sure I'll be accused of being "woke" for merely suggesting such a thing....... How very woke!!!!đ

Of course language evolves, we have incorporated French, Latin. , Americanisms etc and vice versa.
What I think some people object to is that in the current era, made possible by the internet and social media, there seems to be a" movement' whereby the language is engineered by ' others'..... people trying to manipulate the language, not just what people say but what they think.... previously language has developed more naturally and subtly.
I don't think it will be as universally accepted and integrated as people think, as the generations move on.

On the flip side if social media has been around earlier some of the downright offensive words that were seen as the norm may have become unacceptable a lot earlier. Obviously this doesnât apply to referring to a cricketer as a âbatsmanâ and not a âbatterâ

Plus there is an argument that the internet /social media is offering new opportunities to be offensive, particularly personal offence against people that you do not necessarily know. Also your point does not contradict mine , that it is the fact that a group of people believe that they are now able to take it upon themselves to manipulate and even control what people say and think....usually the self-righteous. condescending and sanctimonious.

Doesn't it just mean they're changing the terminology in the written laws of the game? Of course it does, but, don't spoil the fun. The laws have referred to bowlers, probably since they were written, so why not batters, especially as the laws apply to all forms of cricket.

Doesn't it just mean they're changing the terminology in the written laws of the game? Correct. It's just changing the written laws to account for the fact that it's no longer an all male sport that the MCC governs. In an all man's game of cricket for instance, i don't think anyone will be offended if the term "batsman" is used by people in their actual speech. In fact (and despite what the faux outrage from the usual suspects would seem to indicate), i don't believe any of us have actually been asked to change or amend how we speak at all. Complete non-story but if you actually change the story to something other than the truth, then it gives the fossils something to moan about and shout "woke" at everyone about.

Sadly i think if we shoot ahead 20-30 years we wonât have males or females just âthemâ and âthey.â
When you have 9-10 year olds so brainwashed that they want to identify as gender neutral and being encouraged to because itâs âtrendyâ thereâs a problem. I think for years to come there will be a huge issue for young people around not knowing their identities and being confused about their sexuality because theyâre learning about things that they shouldnât be exposed to at such a young age thereâs a problem.

Was a scene in Gregory's Girl where one of the characters jokingly says similar, I think was lifted for Trainspotting years later. Sadly not such a joke any more if some have their way.

It's hard for old uns like us to change our language and I always use phrases such as batsmen, linesman, policeman, fireman, headmaster often without thinking. But I also do a bit of coaching for a girls football team and do find myself trying to neutralise certain phrases like Man of The Match to Player of the Match etc. Ultimately for the next couple of generations they will slip seamlessly into the new language and no one will bat an eyelid....... Why should we change our language Don bradman will always be the worldâs best batsman Changing it to Don Bradperson. Geoff Boy/girl/trancott won't be appy. Trying to ruin crikit now too.
