Incredible finisher a defenders nightmare, made goal scoring look easy in a tough era. Always came across as a nice bloke, spoke sense and was a great TV personality.
Sad day RIP Jimmy

Tremendous player and the epitome of cool.
I'm sure I remember him at the Vic on a wet day when some of the crowd were squeegeeing(?) puddles off the pitch to get the game on. I think he scored, and took out the goalie by jumping and uppercutting the keeper who was spark out, but was still in a white shirt at the end of the game that they won 1-0. (but that may not be 100% accurate . . . )
RIP

This one hits hard. My childhood and perhaps only ever football hero . I don’t know why he captured the imagination of a small boy in SoT like he did - it’s not as if football had vast tv coverage back then - but he did. He was cool, calm, always there when in mattered in the penalty box and had a winning personality. Anyway I was always Greavsie playing in the street or the playground and to me at least he will always be the greatest. RIP Jimmy. I know quite alot of Stokies from a certain era with a soft spot for spurs back then because of Jimmy Greaves. RIP Jimmy

I'm gutted to hear this, although it comes to all of us.
In my book the best goal scorer of all time. He topped the scorers list in the world's toughest league almost every year during the 60s and would have done in 65/66 had he not been ill. Lost his form - briefly - and is most remembered for missing out in the 66 World Cup due to injury and when there were no substitutes, but was back as top scorer the next season.
Of the top scorers for England, he was head and shoulders above anyone else in terms of scoring frequency. Scored a record number of hattricks and rarely took a penalty for England.
Played at a time when pitches were dire and defenders could kick you to death. He would have been fantastic playing on today's pitches, protected by referees.
One of the best autobiographies, a truly great pundit.
Whenever I see modern footballers with their ridiculous celebrations when they score, I am reminded of Greavsie who would run and get the ball out of the net and run back to the centre circle because he wanted most to score another one.
RIP Jimmy, condolences to all his loved ones.

One of the best. Should have played in the 1966 World Cup final but Sir Alf preferred Roger Hunt, which I never understood. Only those that played in the final received a medal The rest of the squad received medals years later including our own George Eastham who no chance of playing because he was competing with Bobby Charlton.
RIP

I commented on this video a few years back. Greaves was before my time but this gives a good indication of his class to those who never saw him play. As I posted in the comment, he'd be a £100m striker these days. The music is also really good IMO, D&B but slightly sad. Most Ronaldo/Messi compliation videos are made by dweebs with painful musical taste, but this was spot on.
RIP.

Great player !!
Watched Bill Bentley give him a "gentle tap" in the first 5 minutes of a game at the Vic in the 60s. Before subs so he spent the next 85 minutes standing on the line. RIP.

As a matter of interest (one for you Stattos), how does his goals tally in the top league compare with that of Law, Rush and Shearer?

Didn't matter what football team you followed everyone loved Greavsie and everyone loved to see him play.
He was universally admired and respected amongst football fans like Sir Stan and Bobby Moore.

Ive pinched this off another forum i go on , it's a poker forum the lad who posted is a Spurs fan RIP Jimmy
One of my boyhood heroes. 2 quick stories in tribute, 1 well-known, 1 not.
Saint & Greavsie. Years ahead of its time. What Soccer Am is desperate to be. And isn't.
Favourite gag (on the day of the Boat Race):-
Greavsie:-I don't like Rowing"
Saint:-"Why not?"
Greavsie: I don't trust any sport that think it is funny to dip their cox in the water"
And 1 from my early childhood. My father (sadly) had similar problems with alcohol. I spent a fair bit of my childhood in cars outside pubs. One Saturday (in about 1969) I was sat outside the Valentine in Gants Hill. My dad then came out, and said the Landlord said I could sit inside, as long as I was very quiet.
The reason soon became obvious-Jimmy Greaves was sat at a table opposite, devouring Steak & Kidney pud with chips etc, and downed 2 or 3 Guinnesses. Landlord says "Do you want another pint, Mr Greaves". Answer:-"no, I'd better get up the Lane-we kick off in an hour and a half". He scored that day, too.
Different times.
