My old uni mate worked on one through the channel tunnel. Amazing how thin the cables are for those things. I think he said cable is less around than a football and it can power more than a million homes. And one of the other ones got knocked out by a fire recently so that's bad news.

The three Nobel Prize winners presented today had done a lot of research within the climat change field, that will explain a lot, for instance humans contribution to the pollution and warming up of the planet. They are 90, 89 and 73 years old - but to me they look like 65 or something. That's really weird!! My grandgrandgrandmother at 58 looked older than them! Was she a coal miner?

I read Syukuro Manabe's papers a while back, it seemed very clever to me but it's mostly from the '60s and '70s so he had to hold on a long time to win. It's like the 2021 Ballon d'Or going to Sir Bobby Moore. A lot of his famous research was done with a guy called Richard Wetherald, but he didn't get a prize and doesn't even have a Wikipedia page, poor lad. An impressive thing they worked out was that CO2 makes the lower atmosphere heat up and expand while the stratosphere, which is really high up, cools down and shrinks. This is a "fingerprint" that tells us global warming is caused by humans, and means that the sky is literally falling. The yanks could tell it was happening by tracking space debris with radar - rocks and satellites don't have as much air resistance as they used to so it takes them longer to burn up.

It's equally funny each time after a new discovery to hear the climate change deniers explain what is happening. Last time I asked, in the end it lead to a "but it doesn't matter, cause then a new planet, a new Earth will appear, or at least by then we know how to live on Mars." A new planet will appear? Seriously!? 🤣

I just saw a bunch of Swedes at a festival - and band called Avatar. Are they considered normal over there?

This week we had a different kind of news report online. An amusement park wanted to hire someone for the ghost train. However, the person should have bipolarity. And as far as I remember the picture in the article showed the Avatar singer in the picture. I have no idea if he suffers from bipolarity, but that's not normal, so then the answer to the question would be no. The job advertisment can be a case of discrimination, according to the article.

Their lead singer was very strange to me but he's a brilliant entertainer, made it one of the best shows of the day and they had Rancid and Metallica up too. He's very proud of being Swedish as well. I've seen Dark Tranquillity and In Flames and didn't think they were weird, so maybe those are the outliers. Why did they say the ghost train person need to be bipolar?

Maybe they thought such a person is "crazy" and would be suitable and the only one who could do the right lunges to scare people on the train. And therein lies the discrimination and BIG unawareness.

So basically we’re changing people’s lives not necessarily for the better (heat pumps ) Forcing people into non practical electric cars so the musks of this world can earn a much needed dollar or two Tying our industries hands behind there backs with environmental tariffs taxes and regulations And China just carries on regardless And all the eco warriors keep buying there cheap Chinese tat I wonder why it’s cheap

China and India are getting some flack on this thread presumably because they are the largest and third largest emitters, but 1. China has become the workshop of the world like the UK was in the 19th century. No country has exported its manufacturing to China more than the UK. The UK has made huge strides in reducing emissions and is constantly announcing further measures, but we should not forget we have side stepped a lot of emissions by getting others to do it for us. 2. Many countries have retained their industry and reduced their emissions, notably Germany, but even Germany major trading import partner is China. The UK imports a huge amount from Germany, notably a sixth of Germany's car production, but Germany gets most of its "raw material" from China. 3. China has made huge efforts to reduce emissions per unit of production. The issue is their massive increase in production. In coke which I can relate about in the first decade of this century increases in Chinese coke produce in some years were higher than the total production of the whole of Europe! At the same time China was sweeping away old highly polluting works with modern state of the art new plant. In the UK we are still operating plants that were built in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. 4. China has declared an intent to be carbon neutral and achieve climate change targets by 2060. This is not as ambitious a some countries, but they have a far bigger task, and I personally believe they are more credible than some of the targets of other countries like Poland, which a huge amount of coal fired power stations, coke ovens, etc.. www.cfr.org/backgrounder/china-climate-change-policies-environmental-degradation5. India of all the major world economies has the most credible targets for short term goals for achieving climate change targets by 2030. I have spent time in India and they have some of the best state of the art plant in environmental terms in the world. I can foresee large problems for India with emissions from transport as they grow. They are building an incredible amount of roads for example. This is a good article by the Washington Post: www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2020/06/12/india-emissions-climate/6. The USA like the UK has exported a lot of its manufacturing to China, Mexico, and elsewhere, which is primarily responsible for the American blue collar revolution and support for the likes of Trump. Despite this the USA is still a major world emitter and needs to be pressurised by the rest of the free world to improve its act.

And yet.... No doubt things can be done but unless china, india and all get on board it's all just pissing in the wind. Someone said to me a couple of years ago that we live in a "post truth age". That struck a chord with me and I guess it really took off when Blair was PM and Alistair Campbell was spinning the news to distort it in the governments favour, and releasing bad news on a "good day" such as a plane crash when the media would be full of something else. The gutter press have been printing misleading headlines, half truths, and outright lies for decades and unfortunately former quality papers like The Guardian and The Independent have joined them, plus of course the news commentaries of the BBC, Channel 4, etc. But worst of all has to be the Internet organs like Twitter as posted above, where anyone can post whatever they wish; the tweet has been refuted: climatefeedback.org/claimreview/despite-2021-being-a-good-year-for-coral-health-coral-in-the-great-barrier-reef-has-declined-over-the-past-decade-and-is-threatened-by-climate-change-contrary-to-claims-by-peter-ridd/I remember reading Gordon Rattray Taylor saying in 1970 the world will change irrevocably in 30 years due to pollution, climate change, famine, over population, rising sea level, etc. He was poo pooed by the likes of David Bellamy, with whom I have had environmental discussion, but is now being proven correct albeit half a century later. That's not to say we should give up, the world took action to stop the release of CFCs and now the ozone layer us being restored. We also defeated acid rain by stopping sulphurous emissions. The planet can be saved from irrevocable climate change but it is a huge call. There are off course silver linings from climate change. The UK holiday industry will benefit. Wine production is now booming in the UK with vineyards even being planted in Yorkshire! I expect the Chancellor to give it a boost this week. If the world as we know it does disappear into deserts and under rising sea level, at least we can get drunk on British bubbly.

These eco warriors need to give there heads a wobble
The fight against climate change can only be won if you take the majority of people with you
On bbc breakfast this morning there was Joanna lumley suggesting they bring back rationing so people are forced to cut meat consumption What sort of stuff is she on
Then we have this ridiculous suggestion of heat pumps I was talking to the heating engineer who was servicing my gas boiler And heat source pumps do not work unless you build the house round the heating They are simply not fit for older housing stock
Then you have the problem of how many in the household and the demand for hot water As whilst the pump concentrates on hot water the heating drops and then it can’t instantly reheat
Of course this can be solved by having solar panels to heat water

Had my gas bill last week for the period April 21st to October 25th.
2 of us in a 2 bed semi, working from home, no extended period away. It worked out at around £95, the standing charge element of that was £47!
Why on earth am I going to pay to rip out that system to replace it with an inferior energy source that will need to run longer and more often, requiring more maintenance and suffering reduced lifespan with a fuel that will inevitably cost more?
Unless the source of the fuel in the grid I'd be drawing off is 100% renewable the argument to switch for environmental reasons appears to be the same as the government promoting diesel over petrol for a few extra mpg, without realising the increase in pollutants countered this negatively. That and manufacturers fiddled the emissions ratings to manipulate the situation.

In my view I think data storage is a far bigger polluter than meat but nobody wants to admit it. All these cloud based storage systems most of us no doubt use, have a huge carbon footprint
