The dust has now settled, and the Rashford memorial being defaced, the raist abuse on social media on our black players how low do we have to go as a society? I say this as a middle aged white man, fed up of seeing teams take the knee before kick off, but maybe I have been ignorent? The rasist abuse following the euro final just reinstates to me that more needs to be done. I am proud to be English, proud to say that I have seen my country in a final (a win would have been better, but you sence that title is only a matter of time) but what do we do about racism in the game?
Kick it out isn't effective, Taking the knee isn't effective,
Do we all have to stand up and start to call people out? Not just in football but in society as a whole?

(The Rashford graffiti wasn't racist by the way) The social media posts were, and generally what do we do to stamp it out? This goes.far beyond football, what do we do to finally make it "not ok" to be racist?

And goes to show the problem don’t it. All these attempts at engaging the conversation and bettering the situation…. And each attempt just gets drowned out and slides down or disappears of the board. Not to mention that each of thos threads pretty much start with the first comment is ‘shitbin’ or that the overall sentiments gets picked apart with some trivial meaningless trivialising. However on the flip side, a thread on the subject of the anger of a a female commentator where hundreds of posters were just openly being vile about women stayed at the top of this board for weeks…..

Whilst your outwardly racist people are a big problem, I personally think a bigger chunk of the pie is the ‘I’m not racist but’ brigade
I must admit, I’m partial to a joke, and without sounding like the cliche, have enjoyed said jokes with my black friends in the past and we have also laughed at jokes regarding the white stereotypes also, maybe this is because that we understand that most of the time, stereotypes just aren’t true, so the joke is more laughable due to the absurdity of the creation of the aforementioned stereotype? Or maybe this is part of the issue too?
Hating someone because of the colour of their skin just seems odd to me, I just don’t understand it, the same way that I don’t understand that a lot of people think that racism doesn’t exist and it’s all part of some big race war planned by the minorities.
Minority racism is prevalent everywhere from the Uyghurs in China, the ‘Cast’ system in India, to white ex-pats in Nigeria (where my dad has been severely racially abused on numerous occasions whilst working).
Hopefully when people stop with the ‘us and them’ mentality the world will be a better place for all races, regions and creeds. Education is bliss, ignorance is not.

The hard part is educating the ignorant. I dislike some people, i despise some people, but none of this is based on colour or creed, after 70 + years i have learnt not to judge a book by it`s cover.

I don’t think banning the racists from attending football matches is enough. Name and shame them.
I also think using some form of ID to open a Twitter account for example is a good idea.

A lot of the online racist abuse is not coming from the UK, this isn't a football problem or even an English or British problem, its global. English football supporters are an easy scapegoat again, banning offenders from football matches for life is not going to make any difference at all, most of them aren't even from this country let alone regulars at English football grounds. Boris Johnson knows this, it just makes it look hes doing something when really he should be trying to make social media companies more accountable.

Boris Johnson knows this, it just makes it look hes doing something when really he should be trying to make social media companies more accountable. The social media companies are just a vehicle for the racists, they won't be able to stop it. I think part of the problem is people think that to resolve this issue or any issue of inequality it means that they lose out, this is the problem that needs to be addressed. Further I think that we'll only know that this has been addressed when people stop becoming offended when players take the knee as a request for equality. Racism happens in this country and is a problem for our footballers and as a society we should be throwing everything we can at it to fix the problem. I agree to a point that fining the social media companies won't immediately do anything but I think we're at stage where the government need to push an anti-racism line because, unfortunately, this isn't something they've done well of late. So even if it's just messaging at the moment I think that's a positive change of direction from them.

From next season, if you heard a supporter around you say something along the lines of ‘you black *******’ would you report them? Would you challenge them? Would you even know how to report them?

They used to have a confidential text number at some stadiums, but useless at the better as no one can get a signal

make everybody signing up for social media accounts supply a phone number. give them a code by text that they have to enter to activate the account. Then ban any phone number that is found guilty of posting racist comments. The user will then have to change their number every time they wish to use the service. Not perfect but I think it would do away with 90% of the bullshit and even the 10% left would soon get sick of the hassle.

Seemed to me it’s just a few posters wanting to engage and have the conversation as to how we as a collective community can help to eradicate racism from football and then there’s a few posts in response to that notion that just seem to trivialise, sidetrack and at times belittle the reason and importance of the thread?

For a lot of people living in repressive countries social media is the only voice they have. Take away the anonymity they could end up dead. I do think social media companies need to do more to stop abuse but there are worse things happening than calling footballers names.

No I wouldn't challenge them. In the same way I wouldn't if they called someone a ginger ******* or an irish ***** or a fat *****. Verbal abuse is verbal abuse irrespective of the object. If the abuse became incessant and over the top then I would say something as I have done in the past but it is the frequency/venom behind the abuse which triggers me not necessarily the specific adjective. Having said all that, I may say something for one off criticism if the racism was a bit more explicit than calling someone a black ****'*....N-word for example. I would speak to the person directly but would not report him unless he ignored my comment and continued with his abuse. Then I would report him.

With one exception I think the discussion on the Oatcake has been pretty measured. The same can’t be said for broader media whose coverage has been close to hysterical, certainly disproportionate and unbalanced.

The first part of your problem doesn’t really make much sense? You can’t just pick and choose when racism is and isn’t acceptable. If you had said no I wouldn’t challenge them because I’m not a particularly confrontational person (which was what I was getting at) then that’s understandable. If somebody is willing to call somebody a black whatever then they could be willing to throw a punch as well.
