I'm not particularly bothered myself to do it and it does look impressive at times, but I do have other items that may contain the union flag in my possession my phone cover for one š¤·āāļø

No harm. Bit of national pride. Had my union jacks up last summer for the VE celebrations so can't see how this is much different

It wasnāt always like this. In 1986 Englandās tournament came belatedly to life when Gary Lineker beat Poland 3-0. This bought much needed relief to the country and despite the sluggish start England qualified for the second round. This sent me into a little bout of Word Cup feverā¦.not that Iāve ever been lacking in that respect. To demonstrate to Lineker and co that the nation was well and truly behind them I lovingly placed an England flag in my bedroom window.
Younger people reading might find this hard to believe but there was a time when football wasnāt fashionable. In fact, football supporters were pariahs, regarded with disgust and contempt. Walking down a street wearing a football shirt could result in people crossing the road to avoid you and if fathers found out their teenage daughters were dating a football fan it could signal a sudden halt to blossoming love. I remember starting work in 1985 and telling one of my colleagues I was a Stoke fan and attended matches and she nearly dropped her sponge. She shook her head and told me she was surprised because Iād āSeemed such a nice ladā. In the mid 80s football was not something the nation could easily hold close to itās heart.
So the flag in the bedroom window was far from joining in with a trend. It was in fact, viewed with confusion. People would walk past the house and glance up and notice it then stand for several seconds with big question marks over their heads. It was viewed as a quirky teenage eccentricity and just one of those odd things you do when you lack total sanity.
Some of the current flag flyers may not be committed fans and in many respects it could be seen a johnny come lately action to those of us for whom football has always been a fashionable passion. But it symbolises that the game has survived and now thrives and, contrary some peoples views, itās always been possible to be a firm England fan without feeling the need to smash somebodyās face in. So lets embrace it.

Remember those car flags that clipped on top of the doors? They were everywhere circa Euro 2004 and WC 2006.

Do we have enough prison cells for all the people that will be waving the English flag during Euro 2020?

Remember those car flags that clipped on top of the doors? They were everywhere circa Euro 2004 and WC 2006. There's a bloke on my road that has them. Problem is, once you go above about 35mph they start to rattle and the fabric frays and rips. So you just end up driving around with two white plastic sticks on either side of your car.

Remember those car flags that clipped on top of the doors? They were everywhere circa Euro 2004 and WC 2006. I thought it was wonderful seeing them everywhere in 2004! Repeat: EVERYWHERE! IMO, 'fair dos' to anyone who wants to support the English team with flags, whether on cars or from the windows of their house --- as long as no idiots decide to get in on the act and start doing any ethnic rough-stuff as a sideline. That really does ruin the whole thing.

Is it that different from years back? I'm not around but mates have sent pics from home of a few around, looks like about as many as I remember from say back in '96. The Union flag looks better but a bit of fever for the euros or WC is all good fun IMO.

Wow! Had I not been born in the US, "flicking the V" would be my "go-to" gesture. (It's way over the head of many US citizens) It's succinct, to the point and appropriate for many social occasions in my book. One finger just isn't enough for enemy "fans" and other assorted idiots. And swearing at stadiums? I thought that was part of the entertainment?
On the opposite note: "Doffing of the cap" always got to me - lovely gesture of respect and tastefully funny when used sarcastically.

Did anybody see that report on North West news on Friday night where they interviewed a couple who had 43 England flags (of varying sizes) draped all over their house, windows, garage, fences, and even some on the roof. The woman said if England get through to the knockout round she'll get her husband to put some more up.

That really does ruin the whole thing. They would probably deny it now but I think the Government became concerned at the sudden rise in ENGLISH Nationalism at the time. The Scots were just starting to make noises about Independence (again) and then as you say the St Georgeās Cross was everywhere. It could have been the start of the break up of the Union, and all down to a football competition!!āļø
