I saw this yesterday and also made the connection with Blade Runner which, I subsequently discovered, makes perfect sense as the same director did both films. Like you I thought Dune was better paced than the new Blade Runner, but that ain’t saying much. That Bladerunner was a bore fest. But, I thought Dune suffered from poor dialogue and not enough plot and character development with too much emphasis on cinematography - both sound and vision. In other words, a feast for the eyes and ears but not enough for the brain which is a bit exhausting for 2 and 1/2 + hours. 6/10 I'm guessing you never read the book mate? I completely understand where you're coming from. A lot of my enjoyment was seeing how he hinted at a lot of the story and took time to paint a picture of things that were a big deal in the books. I really love the first Dune book and want people to share that joy, but I 100% get it that it's not to everyone's taste, which makes me a bit sad. I'd still recommend everyone who's ever liked a sci-fi film give it a shot though, you might miss out on a masterpiece if you don't try. EDIT: the books get pretentious as all fuck later. Saying "not enough for the brain" would have Frank Herbert spinning in his grave! I take it it's not as weird as Lynch's version?

Much more than I thought it would as I’m not much of a fan of science fiction. The book, not maybe surprisingly as it’s a long read and also because it is a book, strikes a better balance between plot, characterisation and setting. Which is maybe why I felt the film was slightly unbalanced in being too much about the cinematography which is clearly, at least based on this and Blade Runner, is where the director likes to focus. Btw, I’ve just read the first two books of Asminov’s foundation series and really enjoyed both. I see that’s also made it’s way to the screen albeit the small screen on Apple TV.

The new one has some funny costumes but the whole thing has less weirdness than the ~10 mins I've seen of the Lynch version.

The French Dispatch…
Very clever film. A bit too clever though. I film where I’m admiring the artistry rather than enjoying the movie. Mind you, getting to see plenty of Lea Sedoux makes the trip worthwhile.
6/10

Seen some ok films recently (Last Night In Soho, Venom: Carnage and The Card Counter) which were all ok (6 or 7 out of 10).
But I’ve just seen a turkey… Cry Macho. Just absurd. It’s amazing to think Clint is still directing and acting in his nineties. Does mean it’s any good though. And this film is worse than n9 good. It’s awful. 1/10.
Here’s hoping House of Gucci turns out as good as the trailer promises. The arrangement of Heart of Glass in that trailer is amazing!

The Colour Room, set and filmed in The Potteries. Story of Clarice Cliff, the ceramic artist. Is it out yet?

Raging Fire…
Now that’s more like it. Hong Kong high octane police and thieves action movie. Ultra violent, brilliant fight choreography.
9/10
Blink and you’ll miss it though. This ain’t destined for a protracted outing at the flix. Definitely worth picking up when it’s available streaming.

No Time to Die: decent enough. I enjoyed the nods to the past and it was a fitting finale to Craig's Bond. 7/10
Dune: confusing and boring. I didn't care for any of the characters. I didn't like the soundtrack (usually I love Hans Zimmer soundtracks). I don't even think the film looked that great - the worms especially were nothing special. I'm usually a fan of Denis Villeneuve films too, especially Incendies. 5/10 (I'm glad the sequel has been confirmed though and hope I enjoy it)
Eternals: cheesy opening and a bit all over the place for the first 45 minutes or so, but it was an enjoyable film overall. 7/10
I had a £2.99 offer for Now Movies so just signed up after seeing The Colour Room recommendation. I didn't find much to watch on there when I had a trial previously, so I'll see how it goes. I'll watch Wonder Woman 1984.

Just watched Jai Bhim which is just out on Amazon Prime.
The true story of the fight for justice in India of a woman whose husband was arrested and tortured by the police for a crime he didn’t commit. Be warned it is absolutely brutal at times and heartbreaking but also uplifting and inspiring.
I can’t praise it highly enough. Absolutely superb.
10/10

Glasgow’s cinemas have finally reopened so I’m catching up with the rest of you. Any recommendations - things to look out for, ones to avoid. Big shout out for Nobody - basically John Wick and every bit as good, if you like that sort of thing. Probably even more lol moments. Loved it. No shout out for Nomadland - 2 hours of dreary misery. For folks who like worthy stuff. Sent me to sleep. Just finished 'Nobody'. Everything I was expecting and more. Miles better than John Wick.

Wonder Woman 1984 - loads of flaws, but I enjoyed it, and it's my favourite film of the 2020s so far. Not that it'd make the top 100 list I made for the 2010s, but 8/10 it is.
I'm not going to the cinema as much as usual compared to pre-pandemic because the price at Vue has increased from £4.99 to £7.99.

Went to see House of Gucci.
Really enjoyed it.
Lady Gaga is superb. Her transition from Honey Bunny to Bunny Boiler is brilliantly done.
Adam Driver is also fantastic.
On the downside, some of the supporting acts, particularly Jared Leto and Al Pacino, are not so hot.
Overall, well worth going to see.
8/10.

Went to watch Encanto and it was a close call but would probably say the 18 hour power cut was a greater highlight of my weekend. If your significant other asks you to take the kids pretend you've potentially got the new Pi variant and need to self-isolate for at least a fortnight then cancel Disney Plus in case it starts streaming on there.

Saw Halloween Kills at the weekend- not exactly reinventing the wheel but it was good to see all the nods to the older films

Been a quiet few weeks in movieland, but the new Matrix (Resurrections) film is out and it is… shite.
It serves as a good reminder about how good the original was and how pish its sequels, including this latest instalment, are.
2/10
Next up, The King’s Man

Well I managed to squeeze in Titane before going to see The King’s Man.
Not sure why I bothered though.
Both films were meh.
I was particularly disappointed with The King’s Man which I was expecting to be full of laughs even if the humour wasn’t just close to the bone but right through it. But it is a film pretty much devoid of laughs. I feel like I’ve been conned! Titane is the latest in a sequence of pseudo horror films that is just a bit too arty for my liking.
4/10 for both films.

Carey Mulligan is excellent in the revenge thriller Promising Young Woman. Along with Wolfwalkers, it's the best 2020s film I've seen so far.

Might watch Dune later. Been pretty dire 2 or 3 years in general for films. When you see the likes of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' winning an Oscar it makes a mockery of the whole award itself and perhaps speaks volumes about the quality around. Utterly atrocious film. Compares to a made for TV effort from the 80s Not seen a really good new film in a while, so much dross being rolled out.

Couldn't remember what had happened in the last 10 mins of the film. If you liked the original Matrix, don't ruin your memories by going to see this. Keep meaning to post on this thread, we watch a lot of movies

Netflix - Don't Look Up. A Satirical look at American politics that pokes fun at all sides. Excellent film and a very good reflection of how media has changed the human race and the way we are being shaped into an even more grotesque species.
