Enjoyed it, old fashioned Sci fi Partly because I was half expecting it to not be very good Not sure it would be as good on the small screen though Saw Dune at the cinema, I can vaguely remember the 80’s version but this one is very close to the book. A lot of people didn’t like it because it’s a slow start, however it is part 1 of a 2 part story. The visuals are amazing and the story is good, I enjoyed it and found it interesting that George Lucas got the idea for Star Wars based on the Dune book. Definitely a marmite movie. Recently I’ve seen Nightmare Alley which was average, Licorice Pizza which was funny for the first 20mins then became very annoying. Jackass 4 which was most certainly funny and a painful watch lol.

I don’t think I stopped either laughing or wincing throughout that Jackass film. Which is one way of saying I was fully engaged!

GoldenEye. Good fun, and I enjoyed recognising the scenes and characters from the N64 game. Some great stunts - the M:I style aeroplane dive near the start, and jumping off that dam!
Although I've enjoyed most of Daniel Craig's Bond, it hasn't half lost the fun of previous Bond's. I hope that fun makes a comeback - it's part of what made Bond films different to the rest.

Judi Dench Oscar nominated for Belfast over Caitriona Balfe, absolutely mental.

Judi Dench Oscar nominated for Belfast over Caitriona Balfe, absolutely mental. The Oscars have been nonsense for years now, content over quality. Bohemian Rhapsody winning an Oscar was farcical.

Watched The War Below on Netflix this evening.
A bit melodramatic. But a fine yarn about the mining of the Messines Ridge in 1917.
7/10

There’s a bunch of films coming out just now I’m keen to check out.
I opted for Death On The Nile today. Having enjoyed the last outing of Hercule Poirot with Kenneth Branagh in the box seat.
I didn’t enjoy this new story. The best bits were all to do with the beautiful cinematography. Just gorgeous. The plot was pretty pish. The acting, full of A listers, was just dull. One out of three ain’t great.
Overall, I wasn’t impressed
4/10.

Watched Moonfall this (early) evening.
A bampot movie. I’d like to say it is so bad it’s brilliant, but, sadly, it’s just bad. It’s like a compilation of sci-fi disaster movies, and every bit as disjointed as you’d imagine that would be.
3/10.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot released today on Netflix. Gory as hell, it cuts out the sequels and remakes and is a direct sequel to the original.
The scene on the bus is brutal

Saw Uncharted today.
It’s based on a video game and draws on pretty much every lost treasure adventure film since Indiana Jones which might make you wary that it is a hopeless hotch potch of a film… and you’d be spot on. Lots of action with no coherence, a rubbish plot, uninspired performances from actors going though the motions, but loads of cgi.
2/10

Saw “People Just do Nothing Big in Japan” last night on DVD.
Really enjoyed it. If you like the series you’ll love it. Doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Couldn’t imagine a decent film being made out of it although it’s possible of course

Any recommendations for a film tonight on Netflix? I get sick of scrolling through so a good review would be enough. No more than 90 mins ideally, need my beauty sleep😉

Saw The Duke over the weekend.
It’s based on the story of a pensioner who stole a painting of the Duke of Wellington by Goya as part of a campaign for free TV licences for OAPs and ex service men starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren.
It’s a cracker.
8/10
Also watched, at last, Mangrove, which is part of the Small Axe film series by Steve McQueen looking at the lives of West Indian immigrants in London. This, the only feature length film of the series, tells the story of The Mangrove, a popular restaurant catering for West Indian flavoured food in Notting Hill that becomes a centre for the local black community (clearly well before the yuppies moved in!) much to the annoyance of some of the local police particularly PC Pulley.
Another very good film. Some excellent music, as you might expect.
Also 8/10

Gemini Project Has to be one of the worse films I have ever seen. Terrible acting, awful script, had to keep checking to see if it had been dubbed but seemed to be in sync. So bad it's bad m.imdb.com/title/tt5656994/

NIGHTMARE ALLEY Wow what a contrast the above post! Great film. Although in colour it leans heavily on the themes of film noir, a morality tale and mystery rolled into one. A very enjoyable watch with twists and turns barely revealed and unpredictable. 5/5 Edit: Didn't realise it was a remake of a 1947 classic www.rottentomatoes.com/m/nightmare_alley_2021
