From a couple of Villa fan friends, Coutinho is a complete shadow of the player he was. Slow, ponderous and being kept in the 11 by Gerrard to Villa’s detriment. Gerrard gambled a lot to get him and it clearly was a mistake but I think he just had to try and make it work as he’d set his stall by Coutinho. Villa fans much prefer Buendia to him. I tend to think it's very fine margins with teams like Villa. At that level a couple of big signings which don't work out and you are already treading on thin ice. I don't think it makes Gerrard a crap manager. It's whether he can learn from this and start with a clean slate somewhere else. I don’t know if it makes him a crap manager but he can have no complaints and even with signings that haven’t worked out he’s got an abundance of talent to work with there.

He's someone I think who got unfairly treated by the fans. He was almost considered a bit of a big head at the time. Having met him a few times in the Black Lion I can only say what a nice down to earth bloke he is and wish him all the success at Hanley. He also made my dog very welcome in the Pub.

I think that would be interesting. Maybe clubs would put a bit more thought into who they are hiring and the whole structure around management would be more considered. Would never happen in a million years but would make it a lot of fun. It can make for an absolutely toxic environment though, don’t think it’s really practical. that's what I meant by fun! or maybe everyone would have to learn how to get along together under difficult circumstances, that would make for a nice change.

Used to knock about with Ryan when I was younger as we're around the same age and lived roughly in the same area, and I can vouch he's a great lad. Liam as well, just one was better at football than the other 😁

You would imagine the job is his if he wants it. Certainly is a more desirable job than it was and could possibly attract a better manager these days but you'd imagine he'd be a popular choice to return .

I definitely don’t think he’s necessarily a crap manager, it’s pretty early to tell either way too, he just set a stall by Coutinho which didn’t work out. He set rangers up in Europe pretty well, can’t really judge the league as they should be top 2 at least every year, but he didn’t do badly, I do think he needs a mid/ higher championship job to start again.

It wasn’t just a case of Coutinho being a millstone though, he was tactically inept and a team packed with attacking talent wasn’t scoring anything like enough goals.

O’Neill (53) is out of work having been sacked by Stoke City in August and while he would welcome another shot at club management, IFA chiefs are hoping he will be tempted to come back to the international scene just as his mentor Billy Bingham did, enjoying great success second time around in the 1980s. O’Neill’s final contract in his first spell as Northern Ireland boss was £750,000 per year. Whether the IFA can afford that remains to be seen but the former Newcastle and Dundee United player is the man they would prefer to replace Baraclough.

Carrick confirmed at Boro. Got a feeling he's going to be a very good manager/coach. Fair play to Boro for giving it a go after the damp squib of Woodgate.

Gary Caldwell’s first day as Exeter manager Brilliant start. He's accused them of being a bunch of scared fannies that gave him doubts over taking the job and that he wants a two way street where they can dictate what they do. In short, he's lost the dressing room on day one and will be out of a job by Christmas. 😂
