Going back a long time and in Div 2 but I had most confidence in Dennis Violett.

Beattie was incredible at pens, did Hoekstra take any?

I always liked Higginbotham's penalties. Just hit it as hard as you can before the keeper can even react.

The ones I’ve felt most confident in in recent years were Beattie and Hoefkens.

SJW always inspired confidence. 100mph down the middle. In you maybe? Not in me He was hit and hope and his record is only marginally better than 50-50 with 5 misses for us in the Premier League.

I’m amazed Walters is so high, probably by virtue that he played about 8743 consecutive games for us.
Awful penalty taker, you’d expect hit and hope from Big Baz playing for the Dog and Dick not a Premiership footballer.

I remember Geoff Salmons missing a penalty at Luton Town in a 0-0 draw , close to the end of the season when we should have won the League.

George Berry for me. Always confident he would slot it in the top corner.

I think Berry missed v Brighton in a 3-2 win. took a good pen Beattie scored v Pompey, can't remember his other. Where's Joe when you need him?Beattie only actually scored 9 or 10 goals for us in total. That is the only one I can remember George Berry missing. Hit the post didn't he? Higgy took a great penalty. I think he hit the post yep. He had one saved in the cup by Paul Cooper who was a great penalty saver. I think he coached Mggleton who saved a few himself. Cooper was so good he doubled for Stallone in Escape to Victory. . Was a lad for Brighton had a blinder that day. Conlon or similar. Was linked with a few clubs then hardly heard of him again.

George was a funny one.
Think it was Bradford away ( Odsal stadium rings a bell ) when we were awarded a penalty and it looked like absolutely no one wanted it..Then up stepped George. We were in raptures and predicting it would fly over the bar and out the ground, appropriate for a rugby stadium.
Oh we of little faith...

Robert Codner was the Brighton player Wasn't it when Berry scored a pen we never lost until he took one at 0-3 down home to that great Man City side?

Awful penalty taker, you’d expect hit and hope from Big Baz playing for the Dog and Dick not a Premiership footballer. Definitely, Super Jon was a watch-through-your-fingers peno taker. Almost always at a good height for the keeper and two or three feet in from the post.

A toddler would be more useful in goal than me, but even given that I always thought whenever Walters stepped up I’d only have to make a slight movement left or right and I’d stop it.

I think anyway, happy to be debunked.

Goalie's always got a chance if you're just blasting it.

Slightly off topic, but George Berry had a penalty saved by Paul Coper at Leicester in the Simod cup (in normal time) but them scored in the penalty shoot out. One of the few shoot outs I can remember Stoke winning

Harry Burrows only missed once that I can remember and he went the longest time without missing. His technique was perfect. Low and hard just inside the post. And when Harry Burrows hit it hard it was HARD. It may be an "urban myth" but I seem to recall stories of Harry missing a pen and the ball almost hitting the corner flag...but otherwise I agree, he hit 'em HARD!

I’m surprised James Beattie only scored 2? He was an outstanding penalty taker so I must have observed his quality from the spot whilst he was playing for his other clubs. Not top flight, but I thought George Berry was a good penalty taker back in the day. Berry was the first name that sprung to my mind. Watching his general play he's be the last player you'd expect to be good at penalties, but he was surprisingly consistent from the spot! No one amongst the travelling contingent at the Odsal Stadium in Bradford could quite believe what was going on. Not only were we 3-0 up but we then won a penalty and George stepped up and struck it home with aplomb. I don’t think I ever saw him miss one.

I was on The Boothen End for the 1969 match against Ipswich, when Harry scored 1 penalty and missed the 2nd. I seem to remember that the ball ended up nearer to where I was standing than the goal.

Was on the Boothen when Painter missed against Coventry one balmy summer evening. Might of crashed off the bar ? Memory does play tricks but i'm surprised to see he scored 4 can't recall him as a regular taker. Took my 6year old to that for his first game. When we got the pen I told him. Watch this. It might be the only time you see us score a top flight goal !!!!!!! In the end he had to wait another 20 odd years 😊
